Actually, it turns out that it is not the places panel. It is folder
panel, which I have under places panel in my dolphin (most likely
default). You can enable it from menu or using F7 key.
OK, I see it. I don't usually have that enabled.
It does do as you say. However:
1) I really want it in the main pane, not the sidebar.
2) The window does not pop to the top of the stack i.e. if the target
folder is covered by another window, it doesn't make itself visible. In
some cases it's just possible to scroll to the right position while
keeping the left button depressed, but not always and in any case it's
