nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?
by Gene Smith
I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read
this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of
any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also,
search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is
kde specific.

Strange Copy/Paste behavior in KMail 1.13.5/Kontact 4.4.8
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone,
I am using KMail 1.13.5 from within Kontact 4.4.8. Also, I am running Fedora 13
and KDE 4.5.4. All of this is fully updated.
I don't know when this problem started, but when I copy something like this from
any email in KMail:
No. Why do you need the "full-install" DVD?
and paste it into any text editor, it comes out like this:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>No. Why do you need the "full-install" DVD?</body>
If I want to copy and paste a tracking number for an item that I purchased
online, it looks like this when I paste it:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>9101128882300487354725</body>
In the above example, this is the procedure I followed:
1. Using my mouse, I select "9101128882300487354725" in the desired email.
2. Right click the mouse, and then select "Copy"
3. Then, I either do "Ctrl V" or "Right Click | Paste"
4. The result is always the same. I get the text that I selected, plus a whole
lot HTML markup...
I have KMail set to compose and send emails in text only.
In my experiments so far, this only occurs when I copy FROM KMail. If I copy
from any other application, and paste INTO KMail, it pastes correctly. Also,
when I select and then copy "9101128882300487354725" FROM KMAIL, and then check
my clipboard, it shows up in the undesired format:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>9101128882300487354725</body>
As far as I know, I didn't change anything to cause this problem to occur. I do
know that up until a few weeks ago, on this same system, if (from within KMail)
I selected and copied something like "9101128882300487354725" and then pasted
the result into any application, I would get this:
"9101128882300487354725"
That is how it has always worked for me, and that is NOT how it's working for me
now :(
Your help is greatly appreciated.

rsync causing disk sleeps and loss of apps
by Anne Wilson
I'm trying to get rsync to operate on a number of directories, but not in a
mirror situation where I can easily use an existing app. I therefore wanted
to set up a shell script which can be run over the network using keychain to
provide the necessary passwords. On a single box it works perfectly, but of
course the network makes it more complicated.
Part of the problem may be that I have followed too many how-tos, and set
things up in a way that fight. First, to get keychain correctly running -
Keychain is set up in .bash_profile and works. Then I read that if you are
going to run a script with cron you need to eval keychain within your script
as it works in its own restricted environment. This makes sense - but does
that cause problems when I run tests in bash, since keychain is already
running?
What happens at the moment is that the script appears to start, but suddenly
stops. System Monitor shows disk sleep for all the rsync threads, and several
kde applications are also affected, notibly kwrite etc and dolphin etc..
To get out of the problem I have killed everything I can find related to those
apps, but I still end up with having to restart the computer. Logging out
isn't enough - even if I can. Sometimes it won't accept logout or even
shutdown, and have to power off. Probably that's when I've tried too long to
cure it.
I desperately need some more experienced insight as to what is happening here.

BlueDevil causes slow start KDE?
by Martin Kho
Hi,
When BlueDevil is enabled in rawhide and I log in into KDE it takes more time
for the second 'boot-icon' appears than when BlueDevil is disabled. Also when
I log out it takes more time than normal. In .xsession-errors I see a message
that BluedDevil was crashed because of a fatal I/O-error. May be the slowness
and crash have to do with the fact that I don't have any bluetooth adapters.
I'm still using a medieval desktop pc :-)
Anyone else seeing this?
Thanks,
Martin Kho

F14Feature: ColorManagement - is there something for KDE ?
by Michal Hlavinka
Hi,
in F14 there is interesting feature - Color Management. For gnome there is
gnome-color-manager, but is there any alternative I can use in KDE? Google
says something about kolor-manager, but I can't find anything usefull. In
system settings - display I can change rgb/gamma, but it's not enough (for
monitor icc profile). Thanks,
Michal

kde 4.6 udisks-daemon crash in libdbus-glib
by Christian Funke
Hi list,
today i upgraded to the 4.6 packages from kde-testing and found the following
problem. Whenever I try to open a file dialog or start anything filesystem
related (like dolphin, usb devicemanager, etc) the system seems to hang for
20-30 seconds and my /var/log/messages gets spammed with:
udisks-daemon[18250]: segfault at 18 ip 0000003ca6a0aba8 sp 00007fff28b13590
error 4 in libdbus-glib-1.so.2.1.0[3ca6a00000+21000]
This also has the consequence that the device notifier is not working at all
(sees no mounts).
I use fedora 14 x86_64 with all updates applied from the following repos:
fedora
fedora-updates
fedora-updates-testing
kde
kde-testing
rpmfusion-free
rpmfusion-free-updates
rpmfusion-nonfree
rpmfusion-nonfree-updates
fedora-firefox4 (Spot repo)
uname -a: Linux myhost.mydomain 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 23
16:04:50 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Anyone any ideas?

Christian

Thanks,
that solved the problem.

kmix memory leak?
by Dj YB
hello,
kmix is taking huge amounts of memory, about 260MB and taking about 40% cpu
time.
kdemultimedia-4.5.5-1.fc13.i686
what should I do?
how can I disable kmix from running? except from erasing\renaming it?
Thanks in advance,
YB.

4.5.95 (4.6 RC2) + kdepim-4.4.9 Blank address book
by Colin J Thomson
Hi,
Just giving 4.5.95 + kdepim-4.4.9 a test out and my address book shows no
contacts at all. I have tried all the usual things but have drawn a blank so
far.
I can use the "select" option when composing an Email which use the most
recent address's.
My initial search on kde.bugs bought up this
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=262339
F14
kdepimlibs-4.5.95-1.fc14.i686
kdepim-libs-4.4.9-1.fc14.i686
kdepimlibs-akonadi-4.5.95-1.fc14.i686
kdepim-runtime-4.4.9-1.fc14.i686
kdepim-runtime-libs-4.4.9-1.fc14.i686
kdepim-4.4.9-1.fc14.i686
qt-4.7.1-9.fc14.i686
I'll do some more research but wonder if anyone else is seeing this?
Apart from this in my short time of testing 4.6 RC2 tonight its looking good..

Device Notifier
by Peter G.
I last used my external hard drive about 2-3 days ago, and device notifier
asked me if I wished to mount it. I just tried the same in rawhide, and it also
asked. Rawhide is updated to today's status, including kde-4.6.
However, in F14, also updated to today's status, including kde-4.6, device
notifier no longer recognizes that the external usb hard drive has been plugged
in and no longer asks me what I wish to do.
