nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?

I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also, search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is kde specific. -gene

Modular KDE?

Hi all, Apologies if this has already been discussed on the list (I did search 2010 archives), I'm curious about people's thoughts on a modular version KDE for Fedora? That is, where one can install a basic KDE and then only the components they want - packages are broken up into individual programs, like "kontact" rather "kdepim". Of course, this doesn't stop us from still using groups/meta-packages to install everything, or a collection of programs (like @kde-pim perhaps?). The benefit is the ability to have a more custom, smaller, faster, snappier desktop. It also makes KDE applications more attractive for non-KDE desktop users (they don't need to install a dozen programs to get the one they need). If you've never used a modular KDE system before, I highly recommend you give it a shot! Thoughts? -c

KDE 4.5 libraries problem with Skype

I have installed Fedora 13 Goddard x86_64 in my machine and I've updated to KDE 4.5, in order to run Skype I installed some 32 bit Qt libraries and when I installed the new KDE desktop I had to remove them because KDE 4.4 uses the "1:4.6" version of these libraries and KDE 4.5 the "1:4.7"... Now I have KDE 4.5 and everything is fine but I can't run lastest Skype because it needs the "1:4.6" Qt libraries, it doesn't work with the new ones, but if I remove the new ones and I replace them with the older ones, many apps seem to be "downgraded" or they just don't work anymore... Does this mean we're not having Skype in Fedora 14 KDE Spin as it's going to be based on KDE 4.5? Many users need skype (in my case I'm running it in a Windows 7 VM) But without it we can't offer reliable "Videocalls" as they're not implemented in IM Clients Linux have. And please do not start with fanaticism about opensource, as I said in ambassadors mailing list: Quoted Mail: Well, I know about the free alternatives, what I'm discussing here is that many users USE SKYPE. We have free software but we can't tell those users who use skype: CANCEL YOUR SKYPE ACCOUNT BECAUSE NOW YOU'RE FREE. If GNU/LINUX and OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE is what matters to you, change to UTUTO or GNEWSENSE as Fedora isn't considered COMPLETELY OPEN SOURCE by the Gnu Foundation. I'm not gonna continue arguing... I'm open to solutions, not "empty opinions" And for me, it's sad that some ambassadors are not thinking in the future of the user... This is not the way to win "ground" in technologies battle... kde-4.5.0 (f13 only for now) coming to kde-testing later today

Just a heads-up, warning, notice, fyi, blah blah. We've got an initial batch of kde-4.5.0 f13 builds ready for broader testing, and will be landing in our kde-testing repos shortly. These will supercede the kde-4.5.0 currently in f13/kde-unstable repo. To be clear, these are not built against, need, or use qt-4.7.0, which will remain in kde-unstable. And, hopefully by the end of the week, we'll have kde-4.5.1 available too. -- Rex

So, a few things here... This isn't Ambassadors material, please keep it either on the users@ list or (probably better) the kde@ list, where most KDE and Qt issues are handled. This is most definitely not the place for it, "urgent" or not. Skype is indeed NOT going to be on the Fedora 14 KDE Spin as it is non-Free software. From my PoV, it's harmful for Ambassadors to promote the use of this software as it encourages lock in to proprietary applications and (probably worse) proprietary protocols. Also, as you can see by your mail, using proprietary applications can be more than a "philosophical" issue, given the breakage you caused yourself by installing it. Imagine telling a new user how to do this, and realizing they have just broken or messed up their installation. Does it really put our distribution in a positive light? You should be encouraging users to embrace Free solutions such as Ekiga softphone, Pidgin and other SIP-based solutions which can be properly packaged for our distribution. Lastly, Qt is supposed to be backwards compatible, meaning that applications compiled in Qt 4.6 are supposed to work in Qt 4.7, etc... If you have encountered a regression, file a bug at Nokia's Qt bug tracker[1], and let the KDE Fedora list know of the issue. This is not the place to discuss such issues. Hi, Is anyone here seeing this: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=240053 It seems an old bug but has manifested itself here since the last beta and also in kde-4.5/Fedora 13 I'll search some more bugs.kde but am keen to know if anyone else is seeing this. testing kdepim 4.5?

Hi, I'd like to test kdepim 4.5 (4.4.92) on my F13 system, so was trying to build kdepim using kdesrc-build. Just building kdepim and kdepimlibs doesn't work, so tried running default kdesrc-build to build everything. It fails at the configuring qt stage.I've tried to install the buildrequires, but get dependency problems: yum-builddep --enablerepo=kde* qt qt-x11 <-snip-> Error: Package: 1:dbus-devel-1.2.24-1.fc13.x86_64 (fedora) Requires: dbus = 1:1.2.24-1.fc13 Installed: 1:dbus-1.2.24-1.fc13.1.x86_64 (@kde-unstable) dbus = 1:1.2.24-1.fc13.1 Available: 1:dbus-1.2.24-1.fc13.x86_64 (fedora) dbus = 1:1.2.24-1.fc13 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem Any suggestions? I'm presuming dbus is critical so building qt without is pointless? Does anyone happen to have a config file for kdesrc-build that I can use just to build kdepim? Or is there an easier way? Command-line desktop specification

How to add password to wallet?

What is the mechanism, if any, for adding a password to KWallet? I read the short KWallet Manager help/handbook , but this did not help me. I have 3 folders in knode. Whenever I check for posts in one of them KWallet asks me to enter my wallet password. WebKit(s) SIG

Hi all (and if not all, feel free to add them to CC). I'd like to establish WebKit SIG (or some sort of group of people interested in WebKit in Fedora - no need for any official one) as it's quite an overhead to maintain such a big beast here. We have QtWebKit, WebKitGtk, Chromium, KHTML... All very similar but based on different toolkit, concept etc. and it's mess currently (with responsibilities etc). What's the reason? - all WebKit-like implementations are very similar with only a little differences (toolkit...) - there are quite a lot of CVEs - it's time consuming to go over all CVEs (thanks for great job goes to Vincent Danen and other brave men from security response team) and most of patches could be shared - a lot of bugs affects all implementations - again patches sharing - sometimes the primary maintainer of one of WebKits is out of time - that means other team member could help - and probably many other reason like we are on the same WebKit ship (and if it's going to sink...) What can I bring to the team? I'm a current primary QtWebKit maintainer (with help of rest KDE SIG people), upstream's WebKit security team member. I don't care about used toolkit - I offer help with Gtk and other ones too - what I care is user experience.
