nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?
by Gene Smith
I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read
this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of
any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also,
search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is
kde specific.

cmake guideline updates
by Kalev Lember
Hello,
Fedora KDE packaging guidelines have evolved over time, but official
Fedora cmake guidelines [1] are still the same that were originally
accepted in 2007.
I would like to propose a few changes to the example cmake spec file to
bring it more in line with KDE spec files:
%build
-%cmake .
-make VERBOSE=1 %{?_smp_mflags}
+mkdir -p %{_target_platform}
+pushd %{_target_platform}
+%{cmake} ..
+popd
+
+make %{?_smp_mflags} -C %{_target_platform}
%install
rm -rf $RPM_BUILD_ROOT
-make install DESTDIR=$RPM_BUILD_ROOT
+make install DESTDIR=$RPM_BUILD_ROOT -C %{_target_platform}
%check
-ctest
+make test -C %{_target_platform}
A few packages [2] [3] have recently had problems with the default
-DBUILD_SHARED_LIBS:BOOL=ON which is part of %cmake macro. Those
packages didn't pass neither SHARED nor STATIC arguments to
add_library() call and relied on the cmake usual default to produce
static libraries. Those static libraries weren't meant to be installed;
they were just used as "convenience" libraries during the build which
would be statically linked into the final executable.
However, if BUILD_SHARED_LIBS is defined, we get unversioned shared
libraries instead of "convenience" libraries. Packagers often don't know
what to do with such unversioned libraries.
Perhaps it'd be better to completely remove -DBUILD_SHARED_LIBS:BOOL=ON
from the default %cmake macro? I would imagine that most (all?)
libraries which are meant to be actually used as shared libraries
contain explicit add_library(... SHARED) and set_target_properties(...
PROPERTIES VERSION ... SOVERSION ...) calls, but maybe that's not how it
is. Any thoughts whether removing BUILD_SHARED_LIBS=ON would break
existing packages?
Anything else in the guidelines which needs discussion?

Looks like kdex.dtd is gone from kdelibs 6:4.4.80-3.fc14.
On my F13 box:
# rpm -ql kdelibs | grep kdex.dtd
/usr/share/kde4/apps/ksgmltools2/customization/dtd/kdex.dtd
Anyone know where it has moved to or what replaces it?

Network Manager Plasmoid in 4.5
by Anoop
Hi All,
Does Network Manager plasmoid works in 4.5 RC-1 ?
I tried using it, but it was not showing any connection, though I created a
wired connection for my wired interface.
Thanks,

Problem Building knutclient Against Rawhide
by Eli Wapniarski
Hi Guys....
I was wondering if anybody can provide some advice. I recently received an
email from bugzilla about a failure building knutclient against rawhide (aka
fc14).
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=599985
>From the info provided in buildlogs (the relevant section included below) it
would seem that there seems to be a general failure in the mock environment as
the only error message in the build log seems to be that mock failed.
The email I receive leads to a link:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FTBFS
which requests that I set a depends on the bug report that was sent to me.
However when I go searching for a bug for mock I'm confronted with agazillion
bugs. (hmmm???)
Do I need to pay attention to this? Is my assumption correct that this is a
general failure of the mock build system for rawhide? Any advice would be most
welcome.
Thanks
Eli

Kinda fustrated with Kabc/Kaddressbook
by Arthur Pemberton
I always seems to have to fiddle around with it just to be able to see
contact information. I've followed all the guide, all the services
that I don't use are running: Nepomunuku, Sringi, etc. and when I want
to see someone's telephone number, I double click on their name, and
get the blank dialog. I already followed the published info for
resolving this.
I can't be the only one using the KDE address book, yet I am not doing
anything special with it. So what should my next move be?
