nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?
by Gene Smith
I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read
this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of
any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also,
search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is
kde specific.

KDE 4.6 beta2 power management
by Martin Airs
Good day all,
Since updating to 4.5.85 my monitor goes off after 10 minutes of inactivity,
I've tried turning off the monitor power management in powerdevil and it still
goes of after 10 minutes, I even tried setting the timeout to 1 minute but the
monitor still goes off after 10 minutes.
It seems something else is turning off the monitor, and powerdevil is having no
effect.
Has anyone else had this, and were can I start looking to see what is actualy
doing it and how to turn it to never!, I would like it to honour the
powerdevil profile as it allways has done in the past.
thank you
Martin

Eric wont install and python qtdemo wont run accelerated
by Martin Airs
Good day all,
When I attempt to yum install eric..
Installing:
eric x86_64 4.4.8-1.fc14 fedora
Installing for dependencies:
qscintilla-python x86_64 2.4.4-2.fc14 fedora
sip i686 4.10.5-2.fc14 fedora
it fails with...
package sip-4.11.2-0.2.fc14.x86_64 (which is newer than
sip-4.10.5-2.fc14.i686) is already installed
I'm not quite sure why it wants to install the i686 version of sip, but I
already have a newer X86_64 version installed?
I'm using all 3 kde, kde-testing and kde-unstable repos and am currently
running 4.6 RC1 (4.5.90.1)
I cant download and install the latest eric 4.4.10 because it still requires
that I yum install qscintilla-python. How can I get around this?
Also when I run the qtdemo included in PyQt4-devel rpm it segfaults and I have
to run it with -software switch to make it work, any ideas why this might be?
Thanks in advance for any help on these matter

Past upgrade, can no longer login into KDE 4.6b2.
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
I've upgrade my F14/x86_64/kde-unstable machine yesterday, didn't see
anything interesting in particular.
However, since the upgrade, I can no longer login into KDE.
The login is insanely slow, and ends up with a black screen.
Looking at the .xsession-errors, it seems that dbus is dead.
The only thing visible during login is:
5862 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit4
5863 ? 00:00:00 start_kdeinit_w <defunct>
5864 ? 00:00:00 start_kdeinit
Any idea what's up?
GNOME seems to be working just fine, so it's no a system wide issue.

Screensaver security diff: 4.4->4.5 ?
by Gene Smith
Hi,
I just installed 4.5.4 (f14) and notice that there is no longer the
ability to get out of the screensaver without a password after
activating the screensaver by moving the mouse to the screen edge.
With kde <=4.4 you could move the mouse to an edge point (as configured
in the screensaver "advanced options" setting seen below the "monitor"
that shows the screen saver as a small graphic) and the screensaver
activates. When you move the mouse away from the edge the screensaver
goes away without needing a password.
With 4.5.x, after moving the mouse to an edge point the screen is locked
(just like ctrl-alt-l) and a p/w is needed to get back.
If the 4.5 screensaver is configured to not require a p/w to get out and
it times out naturally, this works as it did in 4.4 and no p/w is needed
to get out. However, this has no effect on the screen edge activation
which always requires a p/w with kde 4.5.x.
Note the "advanced options" as part of the screen saver is no longer
present in kde 4.5.x (at least for the slideshow under Banners & Pictures).
With <=4.4 it was nice to be able to activated the slide show and see
some pictures and then get back without needing a password. Now this
feature seems to be removed in 4.5.

Entries in Kickoff?
by Martin Kho
Hi,
On KDE 4.6 rc1 (rawhide) the Kickoff menu "Settings" is empty. The menu editor
shows that there has to be one item, "System Settings". Second, I have an
entry "Lost & Found" containing: KDE Calander, KDE Contacts, KDE Mail, KDE
Notes and KDE Tasks, that are links to mobile shell scripts.
Any one else have this? Are these entries correct?
