Hi there,
I upgraded from F22 to F23 and know fighting with some nasty issues that really affecting the daily work. I hope you can help with it.
1. I am trying to restore the thumbnails / preview for videos in KDE 5. Not sure how it is supposed to work as some sources in the net says that installing "ffmpegthumbnailer" would be fine enough for them. However, nothing appears in the dolphin preview setting allowing to activate the thumbs. This situation was very similiar with F22 already, however I managed to rebuild "kffmpegthumbnailer" and it fixed the issue for me (see also https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3719). When trying to use this package, it will appear in preview, but seems to be broken.
So anyone manage to get video thumbs in dolphin running and can give a hint what might be missing here?
2. The option "Extract here" in dolphin seems to be missing. I noticed that the package "ark" does provide the following files: /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ark_addtoservicemenu.desktop
/usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ark_servicemenu.desktop However it seems like these files are not evaluated by F23 KDE5 anymore and thus not working. I tried to fix this by symbolic linking it to ~/.local/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus, but still not being added. And yes, kbuildsyscoca was performed multiple times. Anyone and idea why these options does not appear in the context menu?
Many thanks for your help! Florian

Extract/Compress do work just fine on my system running f22.

I just checked this and I have the same problem with F23, 5.4.3 The options are there in Krusader's context menu.

Hi,
thanks for checking. You seems to be right. When I am using Konqueror the menu for extract and compress seems to be there and working fine as well. However within dolphin they are all ripped off. Seems like it is not detecting the .desktop files for the services for some reason.
Best regards, Florian

it's one of the KDE5 improvements that filemanager context menus are no longer in sync - the same affects "flow view" applet which is now more or less unuseable (no delete, no action menu, nothing useful)

They are in a different place. You see the .desktop files in Konqueror because Konqueror is kdelibs4. I think some fixes went it recently to fix this.
Ciao

The previewers you refer to have not been ported yet to Frameworks. Help needed.

ah - so dolphin is now kdelibs5 and Knoqueror still kdelibs4 while "folder view" applet is based on dolphin - what a mess not deserving a KDE 5.0 release while we have now 5.4.3
so while still searching a improvement we got nothing that bloat by having a mix of QT4/QT5/kdelibs4/kdelibs5 and nobody knows which settings are respected where because upstream is not able to define a common place for configurations and respect them for kdelibs4 and kdelibs5 the same way
yes that *is* doable, you can just ignore settings you don't understand in the old applications, but it would require some thinking about how doing things instead make hard cuts everywhere and all the time
Agreed :-\ I am done with KDE/Fedora.

Hi there,
allright, if someone still suffers by the missing previews in dolphin, it looks like I just found a solution by compiling the latest version of "ffmpegthumbs" from the KDE server. Its been a while since I was creating RPM packages, so expect that the package is doing evil stuff, kill your kitty and likely break something else. It is however working for me and might be a hotfix for those who are currently missing their video thumbs within dolphin:
I added the SRC.RPM for those who wants to rebuild on their own and also including the SPEC file. I am also not sure about the licensing and how this is related to "kffmpegthumbnail" that seems to be for some reason having licence issues and thus was provided within RPMFusion. Maybe some can help leading me if this need to be filled for the official issue tracker or RPMFusion, so someone who actually can do packaging might provide it for the wild.
Best regards, Florian
Hi,
and here a solution for these who are also missing the "Extract here" within dolphin. Seems like the initial approach of symbolic linking against the service desktop files provides by ark was basically the right approach. However for some reason it seems that also the "konqpopupmenuplugin.desktop" is missing for kf5. Thus the menu was not appearing after all.
So in order to fix the issue, simply perform the following commands as root: --- ln -s /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ark_* /usr/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus ln -s /usr/share/kde4/servicetypes/konqpopupmenuplugin.desktop /usr/share/kservicetypes5/ --- Then perform a "kbuildsycoca5" as user. I hope that I not having some other "fixes" in place as it took me pretty long to get this running. So would be nice if someone could confirm that the above description is really enough to fix it. At least here the ark menu is there and seems to be working fine now. Not sure what official package this might go in order to fix this.
Best regards, Florian

well, i would prefer a solution bringing the other ones also back (custom ones, convert image......) instead create manual symlinks for every piece

Thanks Florian, that solution fixed it.
