Garry, this actually sounds a lot like something that happened to me

upgrading from KDE 4.5 to 4.6
I looked at this:
http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi_4.4/Troubleshooting
And did this:
1. make sure my .kde folder hadn't any old config files for nepomuk and
strigi and kdepim by moving those config
files to something temporary, you know, like foorc-old
2. Open system settings and enable nepomuk and indexing. If you don't
really intend to use it, set it for a very conservative usage (I set mine
for 50mb)
That fixed it to me. No idea if it's the same issue, but it does sound
really really familiar.
Those UserBase pages were written with the help of the kdepim developers. I
think it does actually note this, but in case you missed it, indexing is not
essential, but nepomuk is. HTH
