Correct, you can use one or the other, not both nm-applet and
knetworkmanager.
What I do to (temporarily) disable nm-applet, is
cp /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop ~/.config/autostart/
echo "Hidden=true" >> ~/.config/autostart/nm-applet.desktop
logout/login.
