Nonsense, of course. Left or Right-click on it tells me that network
management is disabled.
NetworkManager-gnome never seemed to work on this laptop, so I'd like to

One thing to mention: nm-applet has a check box for "Enable networking".
knetworkmanager doesn't have this, and in fact, if networkmanager ever gets
into the state where it thinks "Enable networking" isn't, then
knetworkmanager doesn't work (ie, it runs, but nothing happens and nothing
appears in the system tray). See also,
