The thread " higher load ave with kde 4.7" sounds related - and the conclusion
there was that the phonon backend might need to be changed.

That indeed may be related now that you bring that up - I had run
virtualbox and got a sound error - which I ignored .. and shortly
thereafter a kde popup suggested my audio hardware had been 'removed'
... that may have triggered this.
