KPackageKit issues
by Kevin Kofler
Hi,
a few things I noticed in KPackageKit under Fedora (but they affect all
distros):
1. KPackageKit keeps forgetting its settings and we can't figure out why. See
this Fedora bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=475303
The thing is, in Fedora, we DO NOT want KPackageKit to automatically install
updates, it should always prompt the user. Yet, we tried:
* setting a default option in kde-settings and even
* patching the code to default to NONE instead of SECURITY everywhere:
http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpms/kpackagekit/F-10/kpackagekit-0.3...
(by the way, I think you should consider also changing this upstream -
installing updates without asking the user is extremely rude!)
and yet it still somehow magically resets to SECURITY at random times. :-(
Moreover, when it does that, it also installs non-security updates, so
apparently it really resets to All, not Security only. The UI displays the
magically-changed setting as "Security only" though.
I tried looking at the code to search for the bug, but I still have absolutely
no idea what is happening. :-(
I consider this an absolute showstopper, so the sooner it is fixed, the
better! Do you have any idea what could be up there?
2. In KpkNotify::updatesActions, you do this:
if ( packages.size() <= 5 ) {
// we already show the user all the packages to be updated
Client::instance()->updateSystem();
}
else {
emit showUpdatesUi();
}
Can you please change this to just emit showUpdatesUi();? For 2 reasons:
* Consistency - having the "Update" button do something different at different
times is surprising and can lead the user into doing the wrong thing
(installing updates when they actually just wanted to review them).
* The user may want to review the update details. You "already show the user
all the packages to be updated", but not the details (i.e. update
description, Bugzilla references etc.). Some users (e.g. me!) want to know
exactly what they're updating before accepting the update!
3. This is more an annoyance than an issue, but it would nice if the sorting
of the updates were improved:
- more important updates should be listed first, i.e. security before bugfix
before enhancement
- within the same type of updates, alphabetical order instead of the current
random order would be nice
Likewise, alphabetic order would be nice in the search results for new
packages.
If this is just not implemented yet and you don't have the time to implement
it, any objections to me working on it and committing the result to KDE SVN?

Plasma crashes if folderview dragged onto panel. BalL ? (F10 KDE 4.1.85-2 Live)
by linux guy
I crashed plasma and my session froze when I accidentally dragged a
folderview onto a second panel in my F10 KDE4.1.85-2 session.
Here are the relevant steps in my session that led to this. My session
was made with:
livecd-iso-to-disk --reset-mbr --noverify --overlay-size-mb 100
--home-size-mb 150 --unencrypted-home
--delete-home /home/xxx/Download/f10-kde-4.1.85-2/livecd-f10-kde-4.1.85-200812161507.iso /dev/sdc1
a) added icons for konqueror, konsole and dolphin to the standard panel
at the bottom of the screen.
b) resized the bottom panel to be narrow and centered. Ala Mac.
c) added a second panel to the top of my window. Added a task manager
to it. Added pager to it. Removed the task manager and pager from the
bottom panel.
d) changed the stock folderview to display ~/home
e) added a second folderview to display /bin
f) resized the icons on both folderviews to be smaller than stock.
Played around with locking icons and scrolling then in and out of view.
g) add BalL. Nothing happened. Tried adding it again. Nothing
happened.
h) accidentally dragged one of the folderviews onto the top panel. My
session then crashed in several steps.

Respin 4.1.85 ?
by linux guy
Any chance we could spin a 4.1.85-3 with the updated dbus in it ? I'm
not sure that yum update worked properly for me due to overlay size
limits.
Thanks

fyi, kde-4.1.85 (4.2-beta2) stuff moving to testing repo
by Rex Dieter
In order to keep separate the stuff that's targeted for F-10, and not,
and for better testing, I've just started working on moving all the
4.2-beta-related stuff into kde-redhat/testing repos.
In particular, what's staying in unstable is koffice2.

KDE 4.2 Icons
by Mark Bidewell
I am using the latest KDE 4.2 RPMs. When I am in desktop view, I
cannot place icons outside the upper left hand quarter of my screen.
If I try to move an icon into any other region it will snap back..
This issue does not occur in folder view. Before I file a bug I was
wondering if anyone else had seen this issue?
