Have you tried to just restart the desktop.
I have to do this every once in a while when the machine starts doing
weird things.

That's it! I /do/ have to restart the desktop all the time. In fact the
situation has gotten so bad I generally /shut down/ whenever I'm going
to be away from the machine for any length of time. Now would you say I
should be able to log out, then log back in, and not have to shut down
every time?
