Hi guys,
As described in this ticket: https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/55, Planet GNOME uses special "badges" to show who's participating in Google's Summer of Code, and here on Planet Fedora they had FUDCon ribbons to use directly on the hackergotchis.
I'm now making a template for future use. What I have in mind is a simple Inkscape file that everyone can open up, and then change the text and the color easily, before adding it to his or her hackergotchi. I've made some simple mock-ups here: http://schendje.fedorapeople.org/HackergotchiBadges/mockup1.png (source is at http://schendje.fedorapeople.org/HackergotchiBadges/try2.svg). This is an example of how they would look on Planet F: http://schendje.fedorapeople.org/HackergotchiBadges/example1.png
My intention is to keep them very simple, because space is limited. The middle three columns of "big" badges are 100px wide, which is pretty much the maximum size for a hackergotchi.
What do you think so far? I'd be happy to try out and implement some other ideas. :)

Glad to see your progress on this.

Pierros, the new maintainer of the hackergotchi requests page proposed a size increase to 120x120 px (I used to make them at 96x96), so probably that's the constraint: maximum width of 120 px.
What I don't like in your example is the badge covering people faces/mouths, is like they are silenced or terrorists trying to hide. We are space-constrained only on the horizontal, you shouldn't have a problem using more vertical space.

Haha, yes, you're right. That bugged me too. :)

So let me get this straight, as long as we keep the width to 120px (or whatever the maximum size is/will be), we can make it taller? That's great news if true, it'll give me a lot more freedom for a cool badge.
Thanks for the info!

I think so, test it with your .planet file.
Hi guys,
Here are some mock-ups (incl sources) for different badges the Planet members can use for their hackergotchi.
The idea is that I'll make a template, which can be used in the future for all kinds of events, so not just Google's Summer of Code.
So: - I want to make them general enough that they can be used for all kinds of events - I want to make them shiny, so people will want to wear them :D - I will make the template in such a way that the color and text can be very easily adjusted, also by people who never use Inkscape - the fact that they can change the text means that the text itself must have enough room and shouldn't have fancy effects (i.e. I wanted to avoid curves and whatnot)
Of course, after I'm done I'll put a tutorial on the wiki describing how people can change the badge, for Inkscape beginners.
By all means, take the source and run with it! Or if you think there's a nice one in here, leave a comment. If nobody has any additional mock-ups or ideas, we could maybe have a vote here on the mailing list. :)
(Personally I kind of like the ribbon from #11. It can be easily adjusted, fits with every picture, has a lot of room for text and is "shiny" enough to signify that there's something special about these people :) )

I know this might sound stupid... but if you want to redo mine with a "retard @ birth" label, feel free ;)

I like the subtle shape of #11, it makes it classy. Still, maybe the gradient color is a bit too strong (I see in the SVG this is easily adjustable)

Yep, that's easily done. :)

I kind of like it like them like this, if I may say so myself. I want one for my own hackergotchi! :D

+1, I like "medium"

Sure! Write on it "Bounty ninja"

Hmmm... y'know, I could get used to that! Think I'm gonna wear that title in real life too....
*ahem* jokes aside though... I've written the beginning of a small tutorial on the wiki for Inkscape beginners to change the ribbon.
I think I'll wait until next week's meeting for feedback on these mockups, and if there's no one who hates this version of the ribbon, I'll use it. :)

One important reasons we are here is to have fun, so go for it. If you come to FUDCon you can also write it on your physical badge.

From my point of view they are good to go. If you get a couple more +1 here I think you can use them without waiting for the meeting, don't wait for bureaucracy.
Well, I decided to make a blog post today.
Blog post: http://jefsblog.wordpress.com/2010/07/04/introducing-hackergotchi-ribbons/ Wiki page: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Hackergotchi_ribbons
If there are any mistakes or anything, please tell me and I'll correct it. :)
Jef
I also did those fudcon ribbons a while back.
The SVG is in this directory: http://ryanlerch.fedorapeople.org/images/
cheers, ryanlerch
