Re: [Design-team] design-team Digest, Vol 48, Issue 19
by Jorge Ernesto Avila
Hi guys, long time no see!
I have an observation about the signup process at admin.fedoraproject.org
I feel a little frustrated about it.
Since this is the design team, what are the chances to redesign this
process?
I would love to have a less scary registration =), and collaborate doing it.
Here is my experience with the signup/account management.
It started when I wanted to provide some feedback to a ticket.
1. To do that I must create my account.
2. I had some troubles doing it, keep in mind that I was doing some other
stuffs.
3. I must invent a secret question, retype my email,
4. descipher a captcha
5. and do some math...
I must confess the math was easy,
6. but the process failed because it expired.
7. Then i filled all of the input boxes again, this time i tryed to make it
quickly because I didn't wanted to loose my time again.
It went ok ,i was informed that an email will go to my inbox,
8. So checked my email, and indeed it came with a welcome message
and a machine generated password, which scared me a little bit.
which recomends a way to change it with a link.
9. So i went directly to it, to change it.
10. But i couldn't because i can't have any password i want, i must follow
some rules.
- A passphrase with symbols, upper and lowercase letters, and digits
must be at least 9 characters
- A passphrase with upper and lowercase letters and digits must be at
least 10 characters
- A passphrase with lowercase letters and digits must be at least 12
characters
- A passphrase with letters alone must be made of at least 3 different
characters and be at least 20 characters long
11. I really don't have the time right now, and patience to decipher that
so... i kept the machine generated password and told to
firefox to remember it.

Hello there! I'm Avi, a new subscriber to the mailing list. I'm a young and
aspiring web designer, blogger, graphics designer Linux and Apple
enthusiast, guitarist and artist. I own and run a network of websites
although due to being occupied I haven't been able to fully set it up or
post regularly. I really enjoy designing and sketching. I would really like
to be on the Fedora Design Team one day!

First evaluations after testing Anaconda and Gnome installations F19 TC3
by Leslie S Satenstein
I thought you may be interested in what I encountered.
In my evaluation, I got more negative feelings about Gnome than the 3.6 version. With 3.6 version, for any program not within the favourites bar, it requires 4 mouse clicks to launch.
With Fedora 19, Gnome 4.x it takes 7 mouse clicks. By the way, with Cinnamon, it is 1 mouse click to open the menu, then slide to the appropriate application and click a second time. Done.
There is a favourites bar as well on the side, and a second favourites bar on the bottom panel.
For a user of the system. Office, browse, email, some installed packages and games, Gnome 4.x is very heavy on using the left mouse button. I ended up with tendonitus and had to quit using Gnome, or suffer major tendon damage (repetitive action damage). It is I that had the problem and I cannot say that others will have experienced similar problems.
I do have questions about Gnome 4. What is the difference between Favourites bar contents and Frequent items. If items are used frequently, they should replace the items in the favourites bar. Frenquent items list is maintained dynamically, and often incorrectly, and the other is a static placement. Did anyone notice that if an item is in Frequent side of the collection, it is no longer in the All side of the collection.
My major grype with Gnome Desktop is the [:::] (9 sided die) launcher. Why is it not removed from the favourites bar and placed next to Activities? Putting it there would save two clicks on the mouse. With a little logic, it may even be possible to replace Activities by this [:::] launcher.
If we look at the Linux users in the world, the majority of the population writes from left to right. (Arabic, Hebrew, and a few other languages are right to left). Therefore it made better sense to have the favourites bar and the workspace selection on the right side of the desktop presentation. Why do we have to slide from extreme top left to extreme right to select an alternate workspace.
Ergonomical design and how people use the computer to generate output would indicate that there is much to do to improve Gnome.
I am trying to be positive about identifying and fixing items that cause Linux users to shy away from Gnome.
Regards
Leslie

Not only I assumed best intentions, I did say I like the idea and that I
think It's a good idea. Kudos to Matthias for doing it.
We just need to change it to fit to our logo usage guidelines, and perhaps
adjust it further so when we finally release Fedora it'll be as beautiful
as possible.
I really think this is a good time to split this thread, because we have
two issues at hand:
1) We need to change (a bit) they way this dialog looks
2) We need to devise a policy for usage of the Fedora logo inside the
Fedora operation system.
While both these things are related, having them both in the same thread is
confusing.
So, please continue discussion related to how this dialog should look (and
which logo file it should use exactly) in the Desktop list, and discussion
about the logo usage policy in the Design list.
Thanks.

It would be hard to assume anything but the best of intentions with the
placement of the logo in this specific situation.
But everyone else who uses the logo (t-shirts, posters, conference
flyers, books, etc.) is required to seek advisement with the logo
maintainers as to which logo to use and in what contexts the logo usage
is appropriate. This has been a Fedora policy for years. I am
questioning why this is not the case when the logo is used in Fedora
itself as well; the Fedora designers don't use rawhide or really any
pre-beta builds (the tools we rely on are too unstable for us to get our
jobs done with) so it was sheer chance that Ryan even noticed this
before it was too late.
