Fedora 35 Wallpaper: Help wanted!
by Máirín Duffy
Hi folks!
Last week we had a pretty fun video chat where we talked through some
conceptual ideas for the Fedora 35 wallpaper inspired by Mae Jemison.
At the bottom of the ticket you'll see there are a few ideas we had that
are in need of some thumbnail sketches to brainstorm how we might
visually represent them:
https://pagure.io/design/issue/707#comment-711132
There are 4 ideas, and if you're willing/able, it would be super helpful
if you'd be willing to claim one of the 4 ideas in the ticket
(https://pagure.io/design/issue/707) and work on maybe 4 or 5 very
quick, very sloppy, very sketchy thumbnail sketches to brainstorm on
ways to visualize the idea.
If this sounds intriguing but you're not quite sure how to start, please
feel free to ping me either here, off-list, in the ticket, or via chat
(I'm mizmo in #fedora-design on irc.freenode.net or in the Design Team
matrix channel at https://matrix.to/#/#fedora-design:matrix.org )
The full list of 4 ideas is below for your convenience :)
~m
1. Perspective / Illusion / Spaceship
Some ideas we talked about here was the visual of cells weightlessly
floating through blood vessels, stem cells, a space ship mimicking the
shape of a human cell.
2. Human Body
The physicality of the human body and how it handles weightlessness (her
research topic for NASA)... thinking about the shape of cells
3. Return to normalcy / Cooperation & Unity between people
We talked about how we are all physically cooped up throughout COVID in
the same way that astronauts in a mission are physically cooped up on a
shuttle or on the space station, and the sense of hope for all us posed
by the incredible things astronauts/researchers can do in this
restrictive environment...
4. Weightlessness / Tron-style GFX / Perspective
We talked about how the perspective lines inside the space capsule are
an interesting alternative to a generic space image... we also talked
about how Tron legacy visuals are also an interesting alternative to
generic space imagery, and how some of the related images also depict a
sense of weightlessness (Jemison's research focus)

[Help wanted!] Graphics for blog post (banner, infographics)
by Marie Nordin
Hi folks,
We are wrapping up a blog post for Fedora Women's Day and we would love to
have a custom banner to use. Any other graphics to include would be a
welcome bonus :) Please take a look at the ticket, jump in and create
something, or feel free to ask any follow up questions.
Design ticket:
https://pagure.io/design/issue/713
Commblog banner repo:
https://pagure.io/communityblog-images
I added a bunch of content to the ticket to use:
Graphics that we used during the FWD event (easy to remix this)
Poll results (could be made into a fun infographic!)
Statistics from the event (same, infographic would be cool)
Screenshots of the speakers (could be included in banner somehow, or made
into a collage with some graphic elements to add throughout the post)
Thanks in advance!

Design Team representation in Fedora Mindshare group
by Máirín Duffy
Hi folks,
Marie opened this ticket today to let us know there is an opportunity
for us to have a representative on the Fedora Mindshare team:
https://pagure.io/design/issue/712
I am happy to serve in this capacity if nobody else has interest, but I
do not want to block anyone from stepping up into this role, more serve
as a plan B if nobody has the bandwidth / interest / whatnot to do it. I
just wanted to make it clear that this opportunity is open to anyone on
the team who is interested!
As there is no formal process defined for how we choose a
representative, I would suggest anyone interested in this opportunity to
either reply to this thread or express your interest in the ticket
linked above and let's circle back in a week or so and see where we are
at and make a decision.
Cheers,

Fedora design video hangouts
by Máirín Duffy
Hi everybody :)
Before the holidays I did a few very impromptu live design
sessions/chats using streaming / video chats (the first was on twitch
but I didn't like how one-way it was, so subsequent ones were on Jitsi.)
We did some live digital painting, a design critique session, and also a
Discourse theming session, with a lot of fun and random chatter and
banter :)
I'd like to continue this on a more regular / planned basis, maybe every
two weeks, and I am inviting my current set of interns and mentees to
join in too (hoping it can be a teaching tool for them!) The idea is
anyone participating can bring some design work they are working on for
some critique / advice / etc. and if nobody has anything to show off I
will always have some Fedora design ticket or thing I'm working on that
we can look at as a back up. I want it to be very laid-back / chill but
also a super-respectful, calm, encouraging, and safe environment. All of
the Fedora code of conduct [1] rules apply.
If this is something you'd be interested in participating in or if you
have any ideas or concerns around it, let me know. I am hoping to
schedule the first session sometime next week.
Cheers,
~m

Hello,
I would like to contribute in the fedora design by doing tasks like wallpapers improvement, or creating icons and logos in the future. My experience is still, for now, to improve.

Kicking off Fedora 35 wallpaper
by Máirín Duffy
Hi everyone,
We missed the boat on getting the F33 and F34 wallpaper out at the same
time. We have the F34 wallpaper underway but I'd like to try to get F34
and F35 out at the same time so we can finally get ahead a release.
As a refresher, each release we increment a letter of the alphabet and
look to highlight a scientist, inventor, or engineer whose name begins
with that letter and use their work as inspiration for the visual
concept of the wallpaper.
For example, F29's inspiration was Alexander Graham Bell ("B") and we
embedded the concept of a vocal sound wave into the visuals of a forest
reflecting in water.
For F35, the letter is J. The first part of this process is as a team we
vote on which of a few J figures we find most inspirational / the best
possibility for cool visuals for the F35 wallpaper. I propose the list
below. Should we get voting?
--
1. Irene Joliot-Curie -
Marie Curie's daughter, she was a Nobel-prize winning scientist who was
the first to transmute stable atoms into radioactive atoms.
Visual concepts around this theme could deal with transformation /
change / conversion, and energy/power.
--
2. Edward Jenner -
Credited with the discovered of smallpox vaccination - he noticed
milkmaids that had contracted cowpox from working with cows were immune
to smallpox and developed and tested a vaccine.
This concept is clearly timely with the ongoing pandemic. We could key
off of that, one of the concepts around defeating an infectious disease
is each individual caring about the needs of the whole community and
being considerate, and understanding we're all one - so that's one
potential concept that could be visualized in some form.
--
3. Mae Carol Jemison -
A medical doctor and sceintist who became a NASA astronaut studying the
effects of weightlessness and motion sickness on human health. She also
appeared on an episode of Star Trek and is the only real astronaut to
ever do so.
Jemison was a doctor (also very timely to feature a doctor with the
pandemic) as well as an astronaut and a teacher/mentor. We've done a lot
of space themes and I'd suggest aiming away from a generic space theme
and maybe thinking about specifically the human body in space since that
was her research topic for NASA.
--
4. Whitcomb Judson -
A mechanical engineer from the mid 19th century with many
railway/streetcar patents who also happened to have invented the zipper.
There's a lot of neat abstract visuals we could come up with I think
around the mechanism of a zipper (which he called a "clasp-locker
fastener"). The way the components weave together, and the general
concept of connecting things could be neat visuals.
--
5. Reynold B. Johnson -
A high school science teacher who became an engineer at IBM and invented
the first hard drive in 1956. In his retirement he invented technology
to enable Fisher Price toys to speak.
I'm not too sure about visuals for this one but the invention of the
hard drive seems pretty significant and relevant to Fedora so I figured
I'd throw it in :)
Cheers,
