The initial idea was to represent new candidates throught their
Wiki-Pages - of course the new Ambassador is free to respond and can add
more to that - showing first results of their work would be the best case.
Understood, but imho it's not really a suitable tool to use for
introducing a new member. Most times the amount of information put in
the wiki is very scarce, and often intentionally so. Putting some
information in the wiki page feels to most much more "final/official and
needs to be fully correct" than writing a mail message, even if the
reality is the opposite. (wiki is easy to correct while archived email
stays around forever)
Maybe we are a bit paranoid from the past, because the Ambassador
List
is our "only" common Tool to colaborate in a effective way and we tried
to eliminate every possible overhead to have a low traffic list.
To me the note signals "shut up" not "communicate and be friends".
But
it's much better tone now with the addition of "welcome them offlist",
thanks for adding that.
I do fully agree that having huge amounts of "Welcome" responses with no
other content on the list are almost completely meaningless and it's not
the type of communication I envision seeing from having new members
write more personal introductions of themselves.
But this said have to add that I would have no significant problem
dealing with such "Welcome" response storms should they arise again, the
only effect would be that I would probably not notice if someone
responded with meaningful info in that same thread.
