Revisiting FADNA (was: Re: [Ambassadors] FAmNA Meeting Summary from 2008-12-17)
by Larry Cafiero
An observation while cursing the bad timing of my final exams (and not being
able to address this issue last night):

Until last night, I don't believe Linuxfest Northwest in April was brought
up as an option for FADNA. Until now, my impression, wrongly it appears, was
that we were locked into either SCaLE or SELF, the latter of which was
deemed to be too close to FUDcon.
If LFNW is an option, we should look at it closely, not only because of the
time factor involved -- both in organizational terms as well as financial
terms (this falls in Q1, right?) -- but also in the fact that this is an
historical year for LFNW, it's 10th anniversary.
I'll retain ownership of this, needless to say, but I think it might be best
to take a closer look at LFNW rather than rush to make SCaLE. I'll do the
legwork on both and report back during the course of the week and have
something for Tuesday's meeting. But those are my thoughts after reading the
minutes and, naturally, I welcome input on the issue. Lots.

Fedora marketing needs you!
by Steven Moix
Hello dear Fedora Ambassadors,
During the last couple of weeks, the Fedora Marketing [1] group has done
some serious internal reorganization, most of which you probably don't
care about very much right now ;)
One important thing to notice is the apparition of something called the
"News Distribution Network" [2]. This is where we need you, the
Ambassadors!
The News Distribution Network is a joint effort between the marketing
group and the ambassador group to effectively push Fedora news to the
media. As you can see on [2], we are currently searching 2-3 people for
each of the following languages:
* English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi and Italian
Your role will be to help us spread news. If you read the whole page
[2], it should be pretty clear what we expect from you :)
If you are interested, feel free to contact me so we can discuss your
candidature during the next IRC marketing meeting next Tuesday.

inactive ambassadors, a proposed solution
by Max Spevack
The purpose of this email is to try to lay out a roadmap for solving,
once and for all, the question of inactive Fedora Ambassadors.
GOALS OF IDENTIFYING INACTIVE AMBASSADORS:
(1) Housekeeping. All projects need to have their membership rosters
pruned from time to time. In Ambassadors, this is particularly
important because non-Fedora people might get in touch with Ambassadors,
and if they don't receive a response, it looks like Fedora is ignorning
them. Other sub-projects for which identifying inactive ambassadors are
crucial is packaging. If someone drops off the face of the earth, their
packages need to be given to a new owner.
Pages that need to a "refresh" policy:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/CountryList <-- I argue that
CountryList is the wrong name for this page, and it should be called
Directory.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/MembershipService/Verification
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/Count <-- why do we even need
this page? Doesn't the CountryList page serve the same purpose?
How often are these pages currently updated? Is the process manual or
automated, or a mixture of both?
(2) Give a more prominent location to the "list of ambassadors per
country". That page should be the most visited page in all of Fedora
Ambassadors. People who are trying to find out about Fedora should be
visiting it, and Ambassadors who are looking for other Fedora folks near
them should be visiting it.
We should have something on fedoraproject.org that says "are you
interested in Fedora? Find a Fedora Ambassador near you to give you
some information" and you type in your location, and it spits back a
list of Ambassadors near you.
(3) In order for any of (2) to be successful, we need to make sure that
the people who are listed as Ambassadors are actually paying attention
to the Ambassadors part of Fedora. If someone is not, it doesn't mean
that they are a bad person -- it just means that they don't want to have
to deal with organizing events or asking questions from newbies to the
project.
I wouldn't be offended if someone removed me from the Fedora
Infrastructure group in FAS, because *I DON'T DO ANYTHING WITH FEDORA
INFRASTRUCTURE*. It doesn't mean I'm a bad person or not a Fedora
contributor, it just means that I don't participate in that part of
Fedora.
HOW DO WE IDENTIFY ACTIVE AMBASSADORS?
We come up with a policy that is simple, and fair.
An active ambassador is someone who:
1) Has joined the group in FAS.
2) Reads and/or posts on fedora-ambassadors-list.
3) Has a useful, up-to-date personal page on the Fedora wiki.
And does one or more of:
* Attends or organizes an event once in a release cycle.
* Maintains a blog on Planet Fedora, with about one post per month.
* Participates on fedora-list or fedoraforum.org to help people w/
questions.
* Indicates their willingness to mentor and guide new contributors or
new users.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH INACTIVE AMBASSADORS?
If someone is inactive, we *DO NOT* kick them out of the ambassadors
group in FAS, and we *DO NOT* remove them from fedora-ambassadors list.
But we should remove them from the "directory of Ambassadors sorted by
country", which I argue again needs to be much more visible and useful,
so that those inactive Ambassadors aren't being asked to do
public-facing things.
When someone re-surfaces or has more time for Ambassadors, we put them
back on the directory.

Equivalent document for Fedora
by Harish Pillay
Ambassadors -
Hi. The following is from Linux Format and the document covers the use
of Ubuntu all the way. Can we find a way to get Linux Format to perhaps
update their Starter Pack with Fedora this time?

Thanks.

02 26 2009 FAmSCo Meeting report
by Thomas Canniot
Hello and welcome to this sixth FAMSCO weekly meeting summary.
The latest meeting was hold on February 26th 2009 on #fedora-meeting
Attendees:
Susmit Shannigrahi
Francesco Fugolini
Max Spevack
Joerg Simon
Regreted attendees:
ThomasCanniot
David Nalley
Rodrigo Padula
Francesco starts by announcing the meeting agenda :
1) Current Tasks Review
2) Inactive Ambassadors
3) Budget
4) Defining a SOP for FreeMedia program
1) Current Tasks Review
1.5 Moving from Joerg application to TRAC to verify membership.
The task has not been started yet, as the process needs to be explained
by Joerg very deeply to Susmit. From Susmit POV, all FAmSCo related
task should go to FAmSCo.
1.6 Ambassadors Membership Administration
Joerg will use FAS as the basis for country list sorting to locate
Ambassadors. Max pointed out that some people may not be sharing their
country. He also adds that it is a good opportunity to ask people to
keep their FAS information up to date and to remind them about our
privacy options.
1.7 FAD
FAD at SCALe was a good event from Max's POV.
There were also good reports from Indian Ambassadors. 4 of them are now
in various Fedora Project and active contributors.
1.8 Release Parties
Francsco is waiting from all the release workflow to stabilize and look
at what both Artwork and Marketing teams are doing to get the release
ready.
1.13 Ambassadors Mentoring
Max will do another Fedora Classroom session about how to be a good
ambassador.
3) Budget
Max informed FAmSCo that Q4 spending is 95% finalized.
He also started Q1 planning with the NA ambassadors regional leaders.
The LATAM budget is also going to be determined very soon with Rodrigo
and his boss.
Fugolini suggested it would be nice to invite regional leaders to join
FAmSCo meeting and discuss directly with them. The idea was welcomed by
FAmSCo.
Susmit also added it would require budget to achieve some Fedora plan
he has in his school.
4) Defining a SOP for FreeMedia program
Susmit recall how the FreeMedia program was managed by Thomas Chung.
Now thanks to the new infrastructure we are moving to, we have to
clearly define a Standard Operating procedure: when to open the request
form and when to close it. Susmit suggested to open it on the 2st of
each month and close it few days afters. At the end of the months, it
suggests to close all the pending requests.
The meeting is adjourned.

2009 Red Hat Summit Call for Papers
by inode0
As we work to organize a strong Fedora presence at the Red Hat Summit
this September one thing I would like everyone to do now is submit a
paper for consideration. The call for papers closes on March 9th.
Details are available here:
http://www.redhat.com/promo/summit/2009/
There are several tracks where talks about open source and Fedora in
particular fit well into the conference program.
If you are planning on attending please also take a minute to sign-up at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Summit_2009
so we can work together to make this a great event for the Fedora community.
Thanks,
John

02 19 2009 FAmSCo Meeting report
by Thomas Canniot
Hello and welcome to this fifthe FAMSCO weekly meeting summary.
I sincerely apologize for being late on FAmSCo reporting.
The latest meeting was hold on February 19th 2009 on #fedora-meeting
Attendees:
Rodrigo Padula
Susmit Shannigrahi
Francesco Fugolini
Max Spevack
Regreted attendees:
ThomasCanniot
Joerg Simon
David Nalley
Francesco starts by announcing the meeting agenda :
1) Current Tasks Review
2) Ambassadors template
3) Inactive Ambassadors
4) Budget
1) Current Tasks Review
1.9 LATAM Events
Rodirogo Padula is leading a global LATAM effort to organize FLISOL in
many countries. FLISOL is supported by big companies like Oracle.
Rodrigo is also negociating about having a FUDConS during this big
event.
Mentorship meeting
A meeting took place and the log of the meeting can be read there:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mentors_Meeting_Minutes_2009-02-15
Rodrigo volunteered himself to attend next Mentoring meeting.
2) Ambassadors template
No update, then the task is skipped by owner.
3) Inactive Ambassadors
Max wrote a email giving a clear and concrete proposal to have a better
management of members. In this mail, he defines what an « active
ambassador » is. However Rodrigo pointed out that Max does not mention
removing Ambassadors. Francsco sums up Max's proposal: to have an
active ambassadors contact list page, which would make the inactive
ambassdors remain hidden. Rodrigo disagrees with this proposal, as from
his POV, some people don't help the Fedora Project at all, but keep the
same rights. Max intervened to explain his POV: make ambassadors
management as simple as possible, and let the inactive/dead account
remain as they are. He also add that people would never agree on a
unique definition of active/inactive definition for ambassadors. What
remains important is that we have to find a way to be sure someone who
emails an ambassador will have an answer very quickly.
The meeting is adjourned.
