Hi
This is Balaji from India . I reside in chennai and i work for an TeleCom Company as a Software developer. I am happy to be part of the Fedora Ambassadors team and i look forward to extend my contributions more to the fedora project. I am already part of the Bug Triagging team and test packages from the bodhi repository and give feedback to the developers. We use Fedora in our company/projects to a great extent.
Now that i ve become an official member of the Ambassadors team i would like to help in expanding the fedora user base and the contributor base.
Things which i feel could be done to kick off my contribution: 1.There are lot of people whom i know who are new to Linux and i help them setting up fedora in their boxes/laptops . I ve been doing that and would continue to do that. 2. There are tech savy people whom i know are interested in being part of big open source projects but are not in a position to start contributing to the projects. I feel this would be a great opportunity to pull in those people to be part of the Contributors team 3. As mentioned above there are lot of people who use fedora in my place of work and hence would like to act as a funnel between those people and the fedora community to bring in their ideas and suggestions that would help us in improving the experience.
I would appreciate any sugestions on the above points :)
Look forward for this exciting journey.
Cheers, Balaji

Good to have you here. Welcome to Fedora Project.

Willing to let us know how many systems/users roughly? Note that we are also desperately looking for more Indian mirrors and if you/your organization is interesting in helping out, let me know.

There seems to be a few ambassadors in Chennai now. Maybe you all can together and hold a release party following the Fedora 9 release. If you coordinate with the local LUG, it would be a great opportunity to reach more users.
Videos linked from http://jkeating.livejournal.com/59623.html can come in handy for knowing what's new in the release.

We have opportunities all over the place to do exactly that.

Wishlist sort of approach doesn't tend to go very well with community projects but collaboration certainly will.

Good to have you here. Welcome to Fedora Project.
Thank you so much and i am happy and excited to be part of this project.

In my project which is a 10 member team we have some 6-7 boxes running fedora and this is just in one project so there are many projects where fedora is installed as THE linux Distribution.Regarding setting up the mirrors, i shall take this up with the company and will let you know whats happening on this front. I would like to know some details on this. What would be the bandwidth required to set this up and what kind of systems you feel would be good enough to handle the load.and any other details that would help me in taking this forward too

True !!! If i am in chennai during/immediately after the release we ambassadors (from chennai) will collaborate and hold a release part for sure . It would be really enjoyable. i might be out of station for a week though i would be able to check mails and participate virtually and share the joy after the release :)
We have opportunities all over the place to do exactly that.
Yeah exactly there is lot of info but lot of my friends ask me on how to contribute and stuff like that though i used to point them to the same link i felt that a little bit of intro on what happens in Fedora ( a small introduction on whats happening) should be really useful i feel :)

Yeah wishlist does not work as every wish could not be satisfied and morever certain things would not just work out but what i meant here was not exactly wish list which would be like it would be good if Fedora 10 has got mp3 support by default so that i could play mp3s but places where fedora could improve upon not from the micro level on a feature by feature basis but something on on a macro level. Ubuntu has something called as an ideastorm/brainstorm but their they discuss specific features where votes are given for each feature but here i thought some feedback and suggestions from people if they have any i feel should reach the fedora project in time .
Please let me know if you have any suggestions too
Thanks,
Cheers, Balaji

Note that the current couple of Indian mirrors don't meet the precise bandwidth requirements and have been despite that since relatively slower mirrors are better than nothing. More such mirrors would help. So if you have the disk space and reasonable bandwidth, your mirror could still be added.

Agreed. Hand holding people through specific processes that match their interests is still useful c.f. mentors.

One of the Ambassadors Goal says that the Ambassador could recruit people for contributing to the proiect . As an ambassador am i allowed to do it ? . If yes how do i proceed in that front too ?
Thanks,

One of the best ways to be a ambassador for a project is to have a high level overview of the history (important milestones atleast) and changes happening within the project. This includes new features in upcoming releases, governance, issues the community is facing, plans to address those issues etc. Read the relevant lists or atleast the announcements lists and the weekly news reports.
While you don't necessarily need to have a keen understanding of every single aspect of the community, having a general idea is important. Being aware of the general steps involved in joining a sub project or at least being aware of the sub project leaders can be quite useful. It is easier to mentor someone else if you are actively doing it yourself.
Most importantly, ask questions. If you are comfortable asking it here, that would be just fine. We usually have folks hanging around in #fedora-mktg and #fedora-india IRC channels in freenode for casual conversations too.

Thanks a lot for the information and i have started talking to the company regarding the mirror setup. They were quite curious to know the benefits they would get in setting up a mirror (public/private) . Some sort of advertisements for the company somewhere in the website and a name mention in the web site ?
I would keep you posted on this front .
Cheers, Balaji

If the company becomes a sponsor, they get credited in http://fedoraproject.org/sponsors. They can talk to the infrastructure team for specific details.
Becoming a private mirror allows everybody within the organization to be transparently redirected to a local mirror. If you have many users within the organization using Fedora and updating it regularly, you don't have to waste company bandwidth and time reaching out to public mirrors.

Thanks. I had a look at the same link and i am in talks with the company for setting up the mirror as well as for the sponsor (i.e for giving some funds as sponsor). Its in talks and i am following it up. I would like to know the following stuff.
1. I would like to know what could be the minimum amount that would enable the company to get their name and logo in the sponsors link if its in the form of cash Is it possible? 2.If the company is ready to buy some new hardware what should be the amount and how would the company send the fund if they agree to it . ?
Please let me know
I will update you on the same once i get some more info
I am doing all i could for the above things to happen successfully .Hope it turns out really positive for us :)
Thanks,
Cheers, Balaji

You probably can get in touch the infrastructure lead, Mike McGrath (CC'ed) who can let you know the details.
