Personally, I think of Linux as ice cream and the whole distro thing as
Baskin Robbins (remember that?).
Baskin Robbins with 31 flavors (distros). Just wanted to put that out there,
to make thread humorous.
I dont really like to compare distros but I think the Linux community gains
as a "whole" when distros
gain achievements and milestones. Yes, Distrowatch is NOT 100% accurate!!
Is there any way how to gauge popularity of one distro? My personal answer
is that "gauging" popularity of Linux distros is not our goal.
For example, that's why I am in the Laredo Linux Users Group instead of a
Laredo *distro* Linux Users group because we see Linux as a "whole". But I
personally use Fedora for its SECURITY and stableness and feature-rich
desktop and plain 'ole reliability. Thanks for everyone for their input!!

I would agree with Arif -- this isn't a beauty contest and
anything that
promotes Linux/FOSS is a good thing, so it's more appropriate to take all
the numbers together as a whole instead of breaking them out into Fedora and
Ubuntu and Mint and . . . .
Further, the statistics on
Distrowatch.com are based on page visits, not
downloads, which is not exactly the most scientific method of gauging
popularity.
Someone else mentioned that there are different audiences for Fedora and
Ubuntu -- arguably yes, but bear in mind that the myth that Fedora is "only
for experts" has been repeately disproven lately -- ask me sometime about
the 70-year-old who got a Linux conversion in my shop and chose Fedora over
Ubuntu after trying both -- so that gap is closing.
(And kital is right about comparing us and them: Don't).
