For your hard disk I would reccomend using "clonezilla" to make a copy of it.
Your installation will transfer over to a new drive just fine.
As for becoming "bluer", just show the the benifits of using open source. Show
how well openoffice works, inkscape, evolution, and all the other amazing software
included. What impresses IT departments everywhere is how fast KVM virtualization runs.
