when an account that doesn't exist is requested in the server mode, apply_subdomain_homedir fails with ENOENT and the whole request fails. I think we should ignore ENOENT, or even introduce a new error code.

I agree that failing request in case of ENOENT is not so much fun as it previously seemed to be, however I thing it would be great if request could be terminated gracefully as soon as no more useful work could be done.

I agree, but I admit I've been looking for a quick fix that could also go to sssd-1-11. Would you mind opening a ticket to either refactor the AD search request to return a special code (like sdap_errno elsewhere) or do some other sensible detection instead?
I think such patch could be considered for master or even 1.11.6 perhaps, but right now I wanted to fix the failing lookup.
