I thought that authconfig used to set domain name to 'default' and at
least that's the primary use-case I can think of.
But renaming the domain works fine for me, what kind of issues were you
seeing in the logs?
It looks like SSSD is trying to access wrong section on multiple
places. Which also prevents SSSD from finding some important options
for example:

If I rename the section name from [donmain/IPADOMAIN] to
[domain/ipadomain.test] everything works as expected.
