I think you're missing the biggest part of the problem, filing bugs.
already filled bug in xine-lib's bugzilla about matroska+theora
support , so long ago that I even forgot I did so... I'm going to try
the rest in rawhide first (according to dirac compatibility matrix 
some of these should be fixed by now).
