X thro ssh
by Saravana Kumar
Hi fellow admins,
I have a peculiar requirement. We have two offices. People from second
office(say #2) want to connect to the server in first office(say #1). They
want to run the GUI applications in the office #1 server from office #2.
I tried to do this with VNC server and it works fine. But VNC is goes thro
unencrypted(open) connection. Is there a way to do this in a secured
way(read that xdmcp is not possible as it uses UDP).
Inside our network(LAN) if connect from one system to other thro ssh and
start an gui application that application shows up in the client. This
doesn't happen when i connect to server and start gui apps(says display not
set). iptables runs in the server. Do i have to open any port for that?
Any help or pointer in this regard is appreciated.
TIA,
SK

Bootsplash in Fedora 4
by Alicia Asín
Hi!
I'm working with Fedora Core 4 and I'd like to know if it's there any
way for using bootsplash with it. I know fedora uses rhgb for bootsplash
but, is that the only way? Because rhgb starts X and I'd prefer some
ligther as bootsplash... In case the only way is using rhgb, how can I
change splash images? Just changing the files in /usr/share/rhgb by
hand? Any special format, size or resolution for them?
Thanks,
Alicia.

[help] suspend the computer from logout dialogue
by Leo
I used ubuntu, but it has problem with suspension on my laptop. So I pick
fedora as my desktop since I use Gnome most of the time.
Here is one small question but it'll be very helpful to me. I can
suspend the computer from the console by issuing 'hibernate' as
root. I'm looking for a way to enable an option in the logout dialogue
(menu: Desktop->Log Out) so that It'll look like this:
Action
* Log out
* Shut down
* Suspend the computer
* Restart the computer
I've enable the suspend command in gdm.conf and can access it from
the gdm login screen however not in the logout dialogue. Any ideas?

Firefox-bin process
by Daryl Goodman
There is a process, firefox-bin that keeps popping up in the System Monitor,
consuming 143 MB of memory. I have somewhat of a limited machine.
What is the process doing? It runs even when the browser is closed. Is it
part of the yum or Up2date process, Up2date kind of kills the performance on
this machine also.

Make KDE apps run remotely/other user be quiet
by Orion Poplawski
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
When you start a KDE app on another machine you get messages like:
Link points to "/tmp/ksocket-orion"
Link points to "/tmp/kde-orion"
kbuildsycoca running...
Reusing existing ksycoca
DCOP Cleaning up dead connections.
You get similar messages when you run as another user locally:
Creating link /home/visitor/.kde/socket-cynosure.
Created link from "/home/visitor/.kde/socket-cynosure" to
"/tmp/ksocket-visitor"
Creating link /home/visitor/.kde/tmp-cynosure.
Created link from "/home/visitor/.kde/tmp-cynosure" to "/tmp/kde-visitor"
kbuildsycoca running...
Creating link /home/visitor/.kde/cache-cynosure.
Created link from "/home/visitor/.kde/cache-cynosure" to
"/var/tmp/kdecache-visitor"
Is there any way to silence these messages or to make the whole process
more lightweight?
Thanks!
