gnome-shell application search much less useful in f18
by Ryan Lerch
While I have been testing out the fedora 18 beta, i noticed a
significant change in the behaviour of the search in the overview mode.
A good example of this is if you search for either "browse" or "web" in
F17, you will get firefox in the results. However, in f18, searching for
"browse" or "web" does not show firefox at all.
I discovered this a few weeks ago, and filed bugs both against fedora[1]
and upstream in gnome[2], and the gnome bug has some insight into what
has changed. Previously, in f17, the gnome-shell search matched against
the fields for Name, Command and Comment. However in Gnome 3.6 in f18,
it no longer matches against the Comment field.
According to the response in the gnome bugzilla, the gnome-shell tool
does now match against "keywords" that are specified in the desktop
file, but it seems that not many desktop files have relevant keywords
specified.
In short, there are a lot of search terms that people were able to use
in f17 that will now be broken in f18, as the majority of desktop files
do not have relevant keywords specified.
I'm not sure what the best plan is to fix this. The tagger app for
fedora does have a lot of great keyword data already for packages, but
it seems like a lot of work to update every package with keyword
metadata when the old way worked, even though it was a bit crufty and
matched "in"s and "on"s and other small words in the comment field.
cheers,

Making the page user-centric makes sense, but remember our target users are
people we want to engage so they can become contributors -- even if they're
not developers.
We were talking in the Marketing meeting about updating the default
bookmarks to point to Ask Fedora, and one excellent point is that those are
only used for brand-new users. The start page is something we can (and
should) refresh. It's unfortunate that it's not as pretty as
the http://fedoraproject.org main page -- but we can fix that.

Existing contributors already follow the planet or know about it, and this
page is not helping to get any potential contributors (aka end-users) to
contribute, because it's cluttery and scary and has a lot of tecnobabble
from the planet and announcements.
The default browser homepage is not the place to recruit new contributors,
and it's really not the place to show information for existing contributors
(we have mailing lists, wiki and planet RSS feed for that)

I've tried, but the general agreement of the design team was that the page

Not really useful. you can put a sticker next to your screen instead, if
you want.

The planet is not really interesting for end-users, and contributors
already have them in their RSS readers.

upgrading issue to f18
by Akira TAGOH
Hi,
I have a problem on upgrading to f18 for the input method
because of the new feature, the input source on GNOME
3.6. IBus is now managed under GNOME by that feature but
there are no compatibilities between older IBus
configuration and GNOME's. in addition to it, there are no
IME nor the shortcut key by default for certain
languages. also heard that we won't ship gnome-initial-setup
in f18 (assuming that it's responsible to setup for them
too). thus, those matters introduces IBus won't work until
one set up on gnome-control-center, which is obviously an
regression.
One positive idea to migrate the configuration is to use
gsettings command line tool for initial boot and my
questions is:
1) is there any possible issues if any script changes
something through gsettings?
2) if not, where would it be better to do? in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ? or via XDG autostart?
3) or is there any better idea to address this issue?
TIA,
