How do I add a new window manager?
by John S. Yates, Jr.
I would like to play with WMI ( wmi.modprobe.de ).
I have gotten it to build on amd64 and can launch it
from the failsafe prompt. What do I have to do to
make it an available session type?

Professionalism
by chapmanccc@juno.com
To the developers,
The Linux operating system is maturing and we all hope that it will be a major contender in the home and business markets. As it approaches this goal, the customer base changes. Linux is no longer the "geek OS" it once was. Where once the predominant profile of a Linux user was a young male, you now find fathers and husbands (I am both), women (I am married to one) and children (I have three). Linux is my main OS at home and my wife and oldest child also use it.
With this evolution, a level of professionalism must also take place. Being that the Fedora project is one of the leading consumer Linux distributions, I would hope the developers would want to 'lead the pack' in this area.
This brings me to my point. I was rather disappointed with the content in the "WebCollage" and "Barcode" screensavers. These screensavers have since been manually removed from my system, but I would have preferred them not to be installed by default. When I install Mac OS or Windows, garbage like this is not included. Why? Because the developers strive to build a professional product. Yes, I can install items like this with Mac OS or Windows, but I would need to download or purchase them after installing the OS.
Developers, please be considerate when creating the Fedora distributions and let's strive to make Linux as professional as possible.
Thank you,
Chris

Kernel issues
by M.
Hello all,
I'm very much a newbie to Linux (running Fedora FC3 for 10 days) and there
is an issue I have run into. The biggest problem I have is that for some
reason my kernel doesn't update properly. My Fedora box is dual PPro running
kernel 667smp, but I know kernel 681smp is out there for download and
install. I run the GUI version of up2date and I always download and install
all patches that are made available.
For some reason kernel 681smp didn't install. So fine, I downloaded the
rpm-package for kernel 681smp manually with FireFox, choosing the option to
run it with the default application, but when FireFox has downloaded the
package and starts the installer, the installer says kernel 681smp is
already installed. Just to double-check I searched on the Internet and found
this command "uname -r", which confirms I am running kernel 667smp.
How do I force a reinstall or an update of the kernel to version 681smp?
Thanks,
Maurice.

ESD output is garbled
by Rob Shinn
I've got Fedora Core 3 using kernel 2.6.9-1.667, the default one that
ships with FC3. I have a SiS 735 chipset motherboard with an Athlon
1800+ XP, and 1 GB of DDR.
FC3 detected my sound card as using the snd-intel8x0 driver, which is
the driver I used on my last distro on the 2.4 kernel . The output for
the card detection test was flawless. Output via ALSA and OSS work
flawlessly as well. But any sounds output through ESD get garbled and
'staticky' sounding.
This didn't happen on my last distro, which was Gentoo running a 2.4.22
kernel.
Anyone got a clue?

Fedora 3 on HP Pavillion zt3000?
by R. Kirk McPike
How compatible is Fedora Core 3 with this model? It's a Pentium M
system with the 802.11b Intel wireless card (full Centrino system) and
a 15.2" widescreen display and CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.
I'd like to try FC3, as I'm very impressed with everything I've read
about it, but I'm fairly inexperienced with Linux (installed it a few
times, played with it every now and then but never used it as a primary
operating system), and I don't think I'd be able to get it up and
running if a lot of low level work is involved...
Thanks for any advice you all can provide.

Default Panel Menu Setup
by Steven Garrity
Has any consideration been given to the menu configuration used by Ubuntu?
Here's a screenshot
(http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=152&slide=50),
but basically what I'm wondering about is the two primary menus being
"Applications" and "Computer" with the "Computer" menu including links
to key locations (Home, Desktop, Disks, Network, Recent Documents) and
other system activities (Prefs, config, screenshot, lock, log-out).
Having seen Fedora, Novell Linux Desktop, and Ubuntu, I'm not even sure
what the default Gnome menu configuration is anymore.
I'm quite skeptical that the relatively minor variations between the
major distros on these menu layout issues leave any one distribution
with a better solution (especially now that Fedora is closer to the
upstream Gnome setup).
I understand that there is room for customization within distributions,
but I'd love to see the best solution pushed upstream and adopted across
the major distros.
While I'm a Fedora Core 3 user myself, I think the default menu
breakdown (shown/described above) is the best I've seen.
Thanks,
Steven Garrity

Re: kde log out menu
by vampire janus
Thanks Rex =) I will try it as soon as I get hold of
FC3 (which is really soon since someone from my office
already have it).
For the others, sorry that this is becoming a tips
section. Maybe too newbie?
But if it is possible to hack out kde to have this
kind of logout menu eventhough the distro uses gdm I
think that would be a great help to all others who are
using kde in Fedora.
Thanks and regards to you all =)
