Event Report, Introduction to FOSS and Fedora

Hi, An event was held at Kendre Vidyalaya No. 1 AFS[1], Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India on Thursday, April 25, 2013. The day started with the talks regarding the problem faced by students and faculties while using their computers specifically about software and operating system which was followed by "Introduction to Open Source". I told the students about the available "Free Software" and "Why to use them ?", under which I basically focused at introduction those software which are mostly used by the students. This was followed by the "Introduction to Fedora." I gave them a demo of Fedora 17 Operating System through Live CD and showed them how to use it. After a short break, a hand-on session of how to install Fedora 17 and use it was carried out followed by Q/A session in which difference between Linux and Windows, and various others common queries of students were answered. I also distributed Fedora 17 iso images to the students and faculties. I sincerely thank Prof. Usha Tholiya[1] and Prof. Gautam Chand[2] for helping me out through out session and preparing Labs. Anyone interested in attending an event at Kanpur?

Hi folks, I've recently received an email from a student who's holding a linux related "bootcamp" sort of a fest in Kanpur. Formally, he's requested that Fedora "sponsor" the event. Now, we do not "sponsor" events. As far as I know, we have no specific funds for that sort of a thing. What we do have is a budget for Ambassadors, from which an Ambassador can request funds to hold/attend an event. Would an ambassador be interested in attending this event and helping the student out? Alternatively, does anyone in India have any spare media/swag that could be sent to this student? Is anyone interested in getting any media pressed or swag made, a part of which could be sent to this student? I would really like to be able to give this student something. We've all been there. Getting the money for goodies is a huge concern for students. [Event Report] FAD Mysore 2013, Saturday, April 20, 2013

Hi, A Fedora Activity Day [1] was held at Sri Jayachamarajendra College Of Engineering [2], Mysore, Karnataka, India on Saturday, April 20, 2013. The agenda included talks in the morning, and practical sessions in the afternoon. I started the day's proceedings on best practices to be followed when working with free/open source software projects, giving examples on effective project, and communication guidelines [3]. The various Fedora sub-projects [4] that students can contribute to were mentioned. This was followed by an introductory session on Python by Aravinda V K [5]. The "Python: Introduction for Programmers" presentation [6] was given to the students. Vijaykumar Koppad [7] then gave an overview, and a demo of the Gluster file system [8]. After lunch, we had a Q&A session with the participants. Questions on working with free/open source software projects, differences between file systems, GNU/Linux distributions, and programming languages were answered. Basic installation and troubleshooting techniques were discussed. I addressed system architecture design concepts, compilation, cross-compilation, and revision control systems, and briefed them on copyright, and licensing. Students had brought their laptops to work on Python scripting, and GlusterFS. I also worked on few bug fixes, package builds for ARM, and package updates: * Bug 928059 - perl-Sys-CPU 0.54 tests fail on ARM * Bug 926079 - linsmith: Does not support aarch64 in f19 and rawhide * Bug 925483 - gputils: Does not support aarch64 in f19 and rawhide * Bug 922397 - flterm-debuginfo-1.2-1 is empty * Bug 925202 - csmith: Does not support aarch64 in f19 and rawhide * Bug 925247 - dgc: Does not support aarch64 in f19 and rawhide * Bug 925208 - CUnit: Does not support aarch64 in f19 and rawhide * Bug 901632 - ghc-smallcheck-1.0.2 is available * Bug 926213 - nesc: Does not support aarch64 in f19 and rawhide * Bug 953775 - ghc-data-inttrie-0.1.0 is available Thanks to Vijay Bellur [9] and Vijaykumar Koppad for working with me in organizing this workshop. Hi! I hope a lot of folks looking to get started with contributing to Fedora are still around! I have here, an *easy* way of helping the community make a better Fedora 19 release. It's rather simple really: - Download the iso files - Run them on a virtual machine (any virtual machine will do!) - Report bugs/issues - * to the QA list[1] - * to bugzilla[2] You need no skills for this at all. Well, you need to know how to download a file off the internet, run a virtual machine, and erm, write an email. Mails about the various Test Candidates are sent to the "test announce" mailing list[3]. Here's the most recent announcement that describes the Alpha Release Candidate 2[4]. The e-mail has detailed information on what you need to do, and how to do it. If you like helping with testing, you could even sit in the blocker meetings and learn more details about the current status of the Fedora 19 release. The more testing each release gets before hand, the better it is. The more bugs we know about, the more we can fix in time. We need your help! I've been trying to test as many candidates as I can. It takes about 30 minutes at the most, if you run the entire battery of tests. FSL in India

I am surprised to see the remarks of a certain Mr. Shakti Kannan on my efforts to learn about FSL installations in India. I am not complaining about not receiving any helpful clues, but I certainly do not appreciate sarcastic and provocative comments of the kind Mr. Shakti Kannan makes. I do not wish to be subjected to any more humiliation. I have decided to quit this mailing list forever. My efforts to understand FSL and implement it in my University will however continue. Fedora Security Lab,

I am still waiting for news about FSL installations in Hyderabad/Bangalore/Pune/Chennai. Either there are no such installations in these cities, or the people concerned are not willing to share their experiences. This is rather unfortunate. I will however be working on this, and will publish my experiences, through the web. You can still help me, if you wish, when I fumble or falter.
