[Event Report] Fedora seminar, August 08, 2012 at Jaipur National university, Jaipur
by Akshay Vyas
=== Report ===
I had organized a Fedora/Linux seminar at Jaipur National University
(Main campus), Jaipur, Rajasthan, India on Wednesday, August 08,2012.
All attendees were graduate students in computer science. They were
all familiar with some basic programming languages, and operating
systems, but most of them were new to Linux.
The whole two hour session was lecture based with some tutorials. In
the first half, I started with 26 reasons why we should use Linux and
open source software, and how it is a superior choice for academics.
I then demonstrated the installation of Fedora 17, and told them more
about RPM, and how to use yum and RPM to install packages on Fedora,
and introduced them to the different desktop environments.
In the second half, I showed them how to easily install a file sharing
server for home and named it as "Install file sharing server in 5 mins
with Fedora". I also provided them with Fedora 17 dvd iso for i686 and
x86_64. Some robotics students asked for Fedora 17 robotics spin. I
told them that I would try to provide the robotics spin as soon as
possible.
Finally the whole two hour session ended up with some questions from
attendees who faced some problems while using Fedora.

Fonts packaging
by Sourav Basu
Hello,
I wanted to start contributing to the Fedora project by starting to package fonts as I heard its the best and easiest way to start. But there's too much of documentation that gets confusing. I don't know which commands to use and how to build. Can you help me out please?
Thanks,
Sourav

RFE: askfedora pop up on clicking "ask a question"
by Ankur Sinha
Hi folks,
I was wondering if it's possible to pop-up a tiny message displaying
information on "How to ask a question" that users can then choose to
"not show next time"?
It's been quite a while since askfedora was set up, and I still see most
posts on as disorganized, without information, without formatting, and
well, mostly not even in question form. I know the idea is that people
will learn as the forum gets utilized more, but I think we should try to
speed up this learning process?
Another idea worth implementing is that users with points below a
threshold should not be able to create new tags and must use
pre-existing tags instead. (Stackexchange has this iirc)
What do you think? I'll file bugs with upstream if the ideas seem sane.
Folks with django knowledge are welcome to work on these tiny ideas and
submit patches to upstream too!
