Ubuntu Install
by dj faké
don't know if this will get me "banned" from the fedora-ppc list, but I
did an install of (K)Ubuntu today and it was the easiest linux
installation I've ever done: download one (1) iso image, burn it do
disc, boot off of it, type "install", accept the prompts (for the most
part), and within 20 minutes I had a dual-boot configured and running on
my Mini.

Re: FC3 PPC development tree / installing FC3 on B&W PowerMacG3
by Patrik Jonsson
Hi everyone,
I've just started trying to install fc3 on my old PowerCenterPro. I've
got the installer starting using BootX, but then I get to a similar
problem as was reported here back in november:
>but at the PowerMacG3 -- which should work with the bmac driver -- there I
>don't i cannot get the network connection to work even when i mannually
>select the driver. The automatic detection doesn't work at all.
>
>>/ > but with the bmac driver. alt Alt+F4 it says:
>/>/ > <7> divert: allocating divert_blk for eth0
>/>/ > <6> eth0: BMAC+ at 00:05:02:61:a3:51
>/>/ > so i guess anaconda could load the driver. but it doesn't go further
>/>/ > then. It just keeps me asking to select a driver...
>/>/
>/>/ Ah ok this is a bug, I've not been able to track down yet.
>/
>
>
My problem is exactly the same, except it's for the mace eth driver.
When I try to load the driver, I get:
/<7> divert: allocating divert_blk for eth0
//6> eth0: MACE at 00:05:9a:a0:51:88, chip revision 9.64
/
But the installer keeps asking for a driver. This is with the "fixed"
installer at ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/fedora-ppc/fc3-ppc/, so I
was hoping it would work. Was it fixed only for the bmac driver?
So my net install is dead in the water at that point. Another problem is
that the onboard scsi (53c94) isn't recognized. I have to hook my drives
up to the aic7xxx card for the installer to see them. Any ideas about
this? This isn't necessarily a huge problem since I can hook the drives
up to the card during the install, assuming I can get 53c94 to work for
the actual OS.
Finally, there are weird video artifacts in the installer, like garbled
columns going down the screen. In these columns, pixels are flickering
rapidly and seem to be a copy of the column 5 chars to the right... I've
seen some emails about this being broken somewhere in the 2.6 kernels,
but no solution. I then tried to boot using my voodoo3 card using
"video=tdfx", but then I don't get past the first "pmac_init" screen.
Any ideas here? Does the installer kernel simply lack drivers for tdfx
and 53c94?
Any hints would be much appreciated.

Apple wide LCD
by Roland McGrath
Anyone using FC4/rawhide X with an "Apple Cinema Display 20-inch
widescreen" connected by DVI to the Radeon 9600 that came in the G5?
It's all wonky. aI copied some xorg.conf magic from a YellowDog install
that works, which makes it manage the aspect ratio, but I think at low
resolution. The colors are way, way off.
Also, what about console (non-X) screenblanking for the LCD? It sits there
all night with the backlight on. Is the support to control this missing?
Thanks,
Roland

yum vs ppc64
by Roland McGrath
I did an install on a G5 from the rawhide "ppc" distribution, which was fine.
(I hit the kernel-smp problem but got around that.)
However, now when I try "yum upgrade", it goes around looking for ppc64
repositories and trying to replace everything with the ppc64 packages. I
assume that this is not what I really want. I would expect yum to upgrade
to the latest flavor of the same stuff I got from doing the install.
What do other people with ppc64 machines do to update?
Thanks,
Roland

Don't have a g5, but that surely looks wrong

max_cpus=1 might work. In fact, whats in there might actually be a
uniprocessor kernel, because there was a bug (or still is a bug) in
relation to the installation
So hit tab, and don't boot into linux (there should be another kernel there, its just not the default)

How can I convert my debian machine to Fedora?
by Ken Young
Hi,
I'm trying to get Fedora running on an MVME 2700 single board computer.
This little board has a 750 PowerPC processor. I've got Debian 3.1
running happily atop the 2.6.11.7 kernel. It runs like a champ, but I'd
like to try running Fedora instead of Debian. This single board computer
(we've actually got ~35 of them) has no CDROM drive, and I had to do
quite a bit of horsing around with the kernel configuration to get it
to boot anyway (via NFS), so there's no way for me to just boot off of the
iso image CDROMs and install Fedora normally. Is there any way I can
install from the CDROM images (which, of course, I can mount
with the "-o loop" option) without booting from the CDROMs? Is
there a script somewhere that will install a minimal set of RPMs
somewhere in my files system, so that I can later mount that area as root?
Is there any way to do a network install without first booting off a
CDROM?
Thanks for any info!

solution - getting a dial-up modem on a PowerMacs to work
by Justin Kelly
Hi All
As some of you will know I've been trying for a while now to get my
dial-up modem working on Fedora 4 test 2 and CentOS 4 beta 2.
I finally have some good news :)
On Cent and Fedora PPC i had exactly the same issue, my modem wasn't
being detected, in wvdial I was getting input/output errors
(http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=52183)
my solution - install the latest yellowdog kernel on centos-ppc/fedora
I downloaded the latest ydl kernel (2.6.10-1.ydl.1) from
http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/yellowdog/updates/yellowdog-4.0/ppc/,
installed it. modified /etc/yaboot.conf and /etc/modprobe.conf(see
below) and now dial-up and sound work perfect :)
Im sure this is not everyones preferred method, but it works.
this solution is working for me on centos-ppc, i tried this method on
fedora4test2 but had issues as the installed kernel is newer than the
ydl one, but im sure it'll probably work on fedora 3
>From what i cant see of the ydl kernel the only main difference when
it comes to modems it that it has Macserial compiled in the kernel by
default where as fedora doesn't. If possible I would suggest this be
compiled in the fedora kernel as well, im no kernel expert, i just
wont dial-up to 'just work'.
Now i just gotta get X working all nice and i'll be very happy.
hint: if anyone else tries this remeber use rpm -ivh and not rpm -uvh
to install the kernel, took me a few re-installs for me to learn this
lesson :)
Cheers
Justin Kelly

X won't work after an F3 install
by richard
I have installed Fedora 3 on a G3 iBook (late 2002), but none of the
graphical interfaces will work properly.
When I log into GNOME as root, I get the following messages: "There was
an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as
themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The
Settings Daemon restarted too many times. GNOME will still try to
restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in." Also: "Nautilus
can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when
attempting to locate the factory." And "There was a problem registering
the panel with the bonobo-activation server. The error code is 3. The
panel will now exit."
When I log in as non-privileged user ("rs") the session is terminated
immediately with the messages:
"/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and
utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w
/var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -1 ":0"
"rs" Agent pid 6646
(gnome-session:6621): libgnomevfs-WARNING * *: Unable to create ~/.gnome
directory: Permission denied. Could not create per-user gnome
configuration directory '/home/rs/.gnome2/': Permission denied
Earlier attempts to install worked graphically for a short while then
degraded rapidly. I tried running an X autoconfiguration called
Xautoconfig-0.22-1a.ppc.rpm which makes little visible difference to the
behaviour.
The machine boots OK and appears to work non-graphically.
Would appreciate any suggestions.

Modem - G4 Powermac - issues
by Justin Kelly
Hi All
Does Fedora PPC have support for PowerPC modems at the moment?
When i attempt to use the Internet Wizard or wvdial I get errors '-->
Cannot open /dev/ttyS0: Input/output error' (see wvdial log below)
also Kudzu doesnt pick up any modems (See kudzu log below)
In the old days :) when i was using gentoo ppc to get modems working
you had to compile 'macserial' into the kernel and modpobe macserial
to get it working if you had any issues, has macserial been
depreciated as I cant find it when i attempt to recompile the fedora
or cent kernel?
ive tried
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/solutions/ydl_4.0/dialup.shtml
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html
and more but have had no luck
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52183
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get modems working?
Bit of a spastic question but do PowerMacs use HCF modems, if so is
just using the Linuxant drivers the easiest solution?
Below is some more detailed logs and info about my system
Thanks
