Probs With Partition on PowerMac with FC4
by Joshua Curtiss
I read and enjoyed your Installing Fedora Core on the Mac mini article. I can't see how this article's instructions would differ when attempting to install FC4 on my QuickSilver PowerMac. So I attempted to do so, with some frustrating inconsistencies.
During installation, before I even get to the partition setup portion of the installer, I receive an error saying, "The partition's data region doesn't occupy the entire partition." I try clicking ignore a few times, and then I receive the error, "Attempt to read sectors 16-18 outside of partition on /dev/hda". Clicking ignore just repeats the error. Finally, I click cancel, and the process continues, although before I can start setting up the partition table, I receive an error that says, "The partition table on device hda was unreadable. To create new partitions it must be initialized, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive. This operation will override any previous installation choices about which drives to ignore. Would you like to initialize this drive, erasing ALL DATA?"
The partition was in good working order from OSX's point of view. Further, after a complete reformat and reinstall of Mac OSX, where everything is supposedly fresh, I still get these same error messages. So, effectively, I cannot set up the dual-boot. What's going on?
And while I'm providing feedback, I have one more beef. I have installed FC3 for x86 well over a dozen times; I am familiar with the installer. And when it asks questions about erasing all data, it DOES NOT take any action until the installer setup is complete and actual installation is ready to begin. Inconsistent with that previous behavior, this last-mentioned error/warning box wiped out my hard drive's partition table IMMEDIATELY, as soon as I clicked "Yes". I was going through a dry run and planned on aborting the installation before it was done asking all of its questions. Because of this inconsistent behavior, I unintentionally lost A LOT of data on my Mac volumes. Needless to say, I'm livid about this, and if anyone has a recommendation on how to retrieve my data from this volume (I have since then not reinitialized my drive or done anything to it, so the data is theoretically intact on a drive with a wiped-out partition table), I would IMMENSELY appreciate it..

ibook G3,radeon and dual head???

Hi guy,
i'm a new users of this list. I'm starting with a little problem on my
iBook G3 800Mhz with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500. When it work in single

Thunderbird problems on FC4
by Michael J. Baysek
I also am seeing this problem with FC4-ppc and Thunderbird. Has anyone
else seen this or know a fix?

Hi there,
I'm having problems with thunderbird on FC4. If I try to launch it, it
just dies after a few seconds.
[root at rmac init.d]# rpm -q thunderbird
thunderbird-1.0.2-6
an strace of it running shows that it is looking for files in this directory:
[root at rmac init.d]# pwd
/usr/lib/thunderbird-1.0.2/init.d
yet, all I have in there is a README file.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but to no avail.
Here is an excerpt from the strace, any ideas would be much appreciated.

insstall problems... lose keybd/mouse!
by Erick Calder
hei everyone! I got my brand-spanking new MacMini a few days ago and, after
some hurdles, I've managed to run through the install of Fedora Core IV.
After installation I reboot and get to a "Welcome" screen... "There are a
few more steps to take before your system is ready to use [...]"
at this point I seem to lose the keyboard and mouse which worked fine during
boot time. Incidentally, both are Bluetooth, both bought from Apple.
so I can't get past this point to actually use Fedora. help?!
thanks in advance - ekkis

Fedora on MacMini
by Erick Calder
hi,
I found your article at:
http://www.redhat.com/magazine/007may05/features/mac-mini/
and have tried to follow but am running into some problems... when I get to
the partitioning section I get the following errors:
"The partition's data region doesn't occupy the entire partition."
then...
"Attempt to read sectors 16-18 outside of partition on /dev/had"
both of which offer Ignore / Cancel buttons. if I press Cancel the whole
installation aborts and pressing Ignore eventually leads to a reboot. the
MacMini is brand new and the Fedorea Core is the latest as of this
writing... what could be wrong?
thanks - erick

Additional explanations about The partition's date region doesn't...
by Vince
Hi,
I have read archives of list but I must say I'm pretty confused
with what I need to do regarding the message: The partition's data
region doesn't occupy the entire partition. Let me explain my
configuration. I own a Powerbook 17" 1Ghz first generation. I
partitionned drive with Disk Utility of Tiger to get two partitions,
first one I installed Tiger on it, and second one free. Once finished
installation I restart with Fedora Core 4 boot CD and I start
Installation and as soon as Keyboard setup I get the error as
indicated above. If I switch to console mode, when I try fdisk /dev/
hda it complains that drive doesn't have a correct label !!
So what do I need to do exactly to get it working and be able to
install ?
Thanks in advance for your clear explanations.
