Updated Fedora Core 4 PPC install media
by David Woodhouse
At ftp://zeniv.uk.linux.org/pub/people/dwmw2/fc4-pegasos-20050922 there
is an updated FC4 tree with current errata, along with a few installer
changes backported from rawhide to make a single boot CD which works on
both 32-bit and 64-bit, Mac and CHRP hardware.
This should fix the parted problem with free space during installation
on Macs, as well as actually installing on CHRP and pSeries machines
(and Pegasos II) which the original FC4 release didn't.
I've only tested a network install on pSeries so far, but there are CD
images in the iso/ directory which probably ought to (boot and) work.

Where do I file a bug report ?
by Dennis Clarke
Hello fedora-ppc :
I am trying to install Fedora Core 4 for PPC on a Genesi ODW
PowerPC workstation and am running into a few problems. Thankfully I
have received help from some gifted people and can at least boot up
the installer process. I found great info and resources at :
ftp://zeniv.uk.linux.org/pub/people/dwmw2/fc4-pegasos/README.Pegasos
The installer will not read from an expanded tree on a secondary
harddisk in the system. I was thinking of speeding up the install
process by putting the ISO images onto a secondary harddisk and
filesystem ( /dev/hdd1 ) but alas the installer will not read the ISO
images from the original PowerPC distro and will not read from an
expanded tree either. I am guessing that I have to create a full
expanded tree on a DVD and then read from there. I'm not sure. This
is a bit of a stumble forward hack and slash approach to installing an
OS but I am willing to experiment a bit.
Is there a place to file bug reports for the Fedora Core 4 PowerPC project ?

Probs With Partition on PowerMac with FC4
by Joshua Curtiss
I read and enjoyed your Installing Fedora Core on the Mac mini article. I can't see how this article's instructions would differ when attempting to install FC4 on my QuickSilver PowerMac. So I attempted to do so, with some frustrating inconsistencies.
During installation, before I even get to the partition setup portion of the installer, I receive an error saying, "The partition's data region doesn't occupy the entire partition." I try clicking ignore a few times, and then I receive the error, "Attempt to read sectors 16-18 outside of partition on /dev/hda". Clicking ignore just repeats the error. Finally, I click cancel, and the process continues, although before I can start setting up the partition table, I receive an error that says, "The partition table on device hda was unreadable. To create new partitions it must be initialized, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive. This operation will override any previous installation choices about which drives to ignore. Would you like to initialize this drive, erasing ALL DATA?"
The partition was in good working order from OSX's point of view. Further, after a complete reformat and reinstall of Mac OSX, where everything is supposedly fresh, I still get these same error messages. So, effectively, I cannot set up the dual-boot. What's going on?
And while I'm providing feedback, I have one more beef. I have installed FC3 for x86 well over a dozen times; I am familiar with the installer. And when it asks questions about erasing all data, it DOES NOT take any action until the installer setup is complete and actual installation is ready to begin. Inconsistent with that previous behavior, this last-mentioned error/warning box wiped out my hard drive's partition table IMMEDIATELY, as soon as I clicked "Yes". I was going through a dry run and planned on aborting the installation before it was done asking all of its questions. Because of this inconsistent behavior, I unintentionally lost A LOT of data on my Mac volumes. Needless to say, I'm livid about this, and if anyone has a recommendation on how to retrieve my data from this volume (I have since then not reinitialized my drive or done anything to it, so the data is theoretically intact on a drive with a wiped-out partition table), I would IMMENSELY appreciate it..

Livna packages
by Michael A. Peters
Way back when I set up my iMac with FC4 there were livna packages
available at
ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/fedora-ppc/fc4-livna/RPMS.lvn/
This iMac generally is not attached to the web. Today I connected it to
update it.
Found over 200 MB worth of updates, but the repository above doesn't
seem to be available :(
Is it being hosted/maintained somewhere else now?

Help...Fedora Core 4 on old world power book.
by sriram
I am trying to install FC4 on Wallstreet Power Book
G3. This is the first time i am trying to install
linux!!!
Since this is a powerbook with the oldworld-ROM, I can
not use yaboot(as i read in linuxppc.org). So, I
booted into Mac OS 9, and installed BooX loader.
With the kernel arguments for BootX
(video=atyfb:vmode:14,cmode:32,mclk:71 single) , I am
finally able to get into the FC4 anaconda installer.
(I have the CDs)
Every step after that went through fine. And when i
finally rebooted, I don't get no where!!!
To find what the problem is, I booted onto Mac OS 9
CD. I see only one partition on my hard drive named
"bootstrap", which contains yaboot.
I guess, for some reason FC4 installer is installing
yaboot bootloader. But yaboot doesnt work with
Oldworld Powerbooks.
Then I went through the installation guide at
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/fedora-install-guide-en/fc4/index.html
I discovered that I never really got this screen
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/fedora-install-guide-en/fc4/ch-bootloader.html
during my installation. I never was able to switch off
the install of bootloader.
What should i do to get this screen ?
Is there any kernel argument i can pass, to stop the
installer from installing the bootloader ?
thanks,
-sriram.

FC4 ethernet printing
by Gerald Raddatz
Mac G4 AGP 450 with 1 gig memory, built-in ethernet, ZIP and internal 56k
modem.
Is it possible to connect a LW16/600 printer using an Apple Talk network? I
use a Farallon EtherWave adapter. And if so, any pointers or directions?
CUPS installation only talks about USB and parallel.
As a home user I am not familiar with all of the terms nor do I know what to
put in all the boxes.
I also recieve the message:
aty128fb: Invalid ROM signature 1111 should be 0xaa55.
I understand this to be connected to the ATI 128 Rage video card. Should I
be concerned? Is there a patch. It may take a few cold restarts to get my
computer to boot.
A relative stubborn newbe and a long time mac user.
Thanks.

Installing Fedora Core on the Mac mini...
by A. Savioli
Hello there.
Your article "Installing Fedora Core on the Mac mini" by Colin Charles is
pretty amazing and sounds just fine and easy. In fact I wish it would be
that simple...
But, after trying a thousand times, I've given up installing my Fedora Core
4 on my Mac mini. The reason: the mini WON'T boot from a DVD. (Specially a
DVD that has nothing to do with "Apple" stuff... I just read this from a
customer support page on Apple.)
So, my question is, could you please extend your article with a solution for
this problem? I know that I'm not alone on this.
Thank you so much for your attention here.
Tony.
