CPU compatibility layer
by Mattia Tristo
I have wrotten a thread in Linux Forums about a CPU Layer compatibility to
answer little-big endian method. I think it would be wonderful to teach the
kernel to convert between the two types and ask the layer to do the
translations ordering the data in memory or letting them in the original
state.
If the original data is from the most used format (in terms of Linux Users
an lines of code written) to the same it is not converted,
else if it is from the last used to the most it is converted.
What do you think about this?
Can be made?
P.S.: There would be a lot of code and software repository that could be
made in the same way!!!
Best regards
Mattia Tristo

Fedora 16: can't boot ppc-DVD
by Federico Vaga
I'm trying to install Fedora 16 on a powerbook G4; on boot the system return
continuously the following error:
Machine check in kernel mode.
Caused by (from SRR1=149030 ) Transfer error ack signal
so I can't installa Fedora 16.
(No problem with ppc64-DVD on an iMac G5)

I'll give that a try. Or I guess I could go down a rev to Fedora 9 or 12 or whatever.

good suggestion, tried that and 25 secs into the install the system switches from output of
messages to the console to a black screen with a blue section on the right. Then it just sits
there.
So I figure my system hardware is borked, perhaps.
I download and burn the Debian PPC64 DVD iso and try to install with that. It comes up with
options for install, install64 and expert and expert64. I select expert64 and installation
proceeds smoothly and all in text. No graphics to be seen.
Not sure what's up with the Fedora 16 installer or my system on this dual socket dual core G5 but
getting an installation going is turning out to be too much like work.

Thanks for the help, however, same result. I end up with black on the left of the screen and blue
on the right. No text .. no menus, nothing.
Wish there was a headless option with a serial port.

Installing Fedora 16 Release on Intellistation 9111-285 headless...
by Link
Hih0 list,
1. Startup your Intellistation, and wait for the banner full of IBM
chars. Configure the boot order to use the internal DVD drive first.
2. To access the 'Advanced System Management' WebGUI of your HMC via https://
(which is mandatory),
the following SSL method must be allowed in your web browser. Under
the built-in URL 'about:config' of Firefox, set:
security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_40_md5;true.
The standard passwords to access the WebGUI (after resetting the HMC)
are: admin/admin or general/general (User/Password).
3. Depending on your current OFW state, it could be necessary to reset
the NVRAM via the menu option:
System Service Aids -> Factory Configuration -> Firmware.
This will reset the OFW variable 'real-base' to C0000, which saves you
a crash shortly after the message 'returnung from prom_init'
when trying to boot from the Fedora DVD.
4. When the yaboot prompt appears, enter linux vnc
vncpassword=123456789 to start. Note: Usually, the first char is
sucked away, watch your typing.
5. With a GXT6500P or similar graphics board installed, we are now
blind and have to tell some things to the installer in the following
order:
- after the screen went off (no sync), wait for the DVD to load some
data for a few minutes (the DVD will be accessed 2 short times at
least when finished).
- enter '1' and hit return. This results in a short access to the DVD.
- enter '1' and hit return again. After that the DVD loads for approx.
7 minutes, Wait for the drive to finish while the LED is on.
- After 1 minute there will be a short sound from the drive. Enter '1'
and press return for the last time, this will open the VNC server on
remote side.
6. With the 'nmap' utility the DHCP assigned interface of port T5 will
read '5901/tcp open vnc-1' and '6001/tcp open X11:1' now.
Connect your VNC viewer to the IP address assigned by your DHCP
server, port 5901 and password 123456789 (as told at yaboot prompt).
7. Reboot the machine via the WebGUI after the installation. Do some
updates and 'write bugs'.
P.S.
Would be cool if someone can incorporate the GXT6500P patch from CRUX
PPC to have some blazzering fast display (or display at all löl :)
pP.S.
here is a dmesg right after b00ting the fresh installation for the
first time:

Fedora 16 on Power - install problems very early in the process
by Dennis Clarke
Yay .. Merry Christmas

Not too sure which list to write to so I will hit them both, first person to tell me "don't
crosspost" wins :-)
So I bought a Mac G5 just to run this and when I hit "c" at POST power on time I do get the yaboot
prompt. So I hit enter and a pile of goodness starts to happen. All of that is text and that is
good.
Then I see a screen which is half black on the left and blue on the right and nothing else. No
text anywhere. Nothing.
I figure that for some obscure reason my G5 wants to display the center of the screen way the heck
off to the right. However no amount of adjustment of my monitor will help here.
I check the release notes and note this thing :
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=766862
I don't think that is what is happening here.
Is there a pure text installer ? An option I can give to yaboot to go with pure text just so I can
get the OS installed and network setup and then I can fiddle with Xorg later ?

Announcement: Release of Fedora 16 on Power
by Phil Knirsch
Hi everyone!
As a holiday present the Fedora Secondary Arch team for Power is proud
to announce the release of Fedora 16 on Power.
Grab it while it's fresh from here:
https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist/Fedora/16/ppc64/
under releases/16/Fedora/ppc64
or directly from
http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora-secondary/releases/16/Fedora/ppc64
We managed to squash almost all of the few remaining issues we've had
after Beta and have documented workarounds for the remaining issue we
still have in the release notes text which can be found here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_16_PPC_release_notes
The most noticeable ones are the fixes to the radeon and the mga drivers
to work a lot better out of the box on Power now, see:
746410 [MGA_CARD_TYPE_G550] Add /lib/firmware/matrox/g400_warp.fw into
initramfs
766862 Power Mac G5 locks at boot (radeon.agpmode=-1 fixes it)
Over the last months the team as well as the package maintainers put it
a fantastic effort to get everything into shape to get us to this point
where we can declare this to be a release.
We'd also like to thank everyone who has been willing to test our Alpha
and Beta versions and give us great feedback and helped to make this a
pretty solid release.
It's probably not perfect, but in the light of it being the first
release since Fedora 12 we're pretty happy with how it turned out in the
end.
We'll also be releasing updates via the normal means in regular
intervals, just like on the primary arch, so working with Fedora 16 on
Power should give you the same experience as on Intel platforms.
For Fedora-17 we're aiming to flash out the last few minor issues we've
seen lurking around and to make sure we're as close as possible to
primary arch from a package build state.
With all that being said i'd like to wish everyone happy holidays and a
happy new year from me and the whole Fedora Secondary Arch team for Power.
See you next year!
Thanks & regards, Phil
