Problem compiling kernel on OldWorld Mac
by Patrik Jonsson
Hi all,
I managed to install fc3 on my old PowerCenterPro, but unfortunately the
kernel that I used for the installation has the SCSI drivers compiled as
modules (mac53c94 and aix7xxx), so the system can't boot since it can't
see the disks. I figured I could just recompile the kernel with these
drivers included, so I used the installer to get a shell going and
chroot'ed into my installation. I got the kernel source from
http://fedoraproject.org/fedorappc/FC-3/ and recompiled with the SCSI
drivers included. However, this kernel does nothing. I copied all the
versions of vmlinux in arch/ppc/boot/images to my MacOS volume, and
BootX only recognizes vmlinux.elf-pmac. The others don't show up in the
list of kernels available. (I'm out of date on this kernel naming, back
when I last compiled a kernel you got a vmlinux or vmlinuz and that was
it...) When I try to boot this, the system just hangs. No message, no
nothing. I did cut out a lot of useless stuff from the kernel
compilation, but I would think that I would at least get to the
pmac_init() screen. The video driver (atyfb) was compiled in.
So, my questions are:
1. Is there anything obvious that would completely prevent my compiled
kernel from booting?
2. Is it normal that BootX only shows the vmlinux.elf-pmac kernel? I
would have expected vmlinux.coff to show up, since I was under the
impression that it is the old "vmlinuz" format?
3. Was the installer kernel compiled with the "default" ppc config file
in the kernel source?
Thanks,
/Patrik

FC4 Test 2 Issues
by P Cieslar
Sorry for starting a similar thread, but the old thread "vncviewer" was
no longer letting me reply.
I have had my ibook for over 2 years now. The first time i have ever
heard the fan was last night - after installing FC4. The same thing
happened again today, while the ibook was sitting idle. The fan was
very loud and the ibook was incredibly hot. Have never seen it this
way, even with FC3 installed.
A few questions:
Is this normal?
Will this damage my ibook?
How do I get sound?
How do I get my modem working?
lspci shows:

8250 vs pmac_zilog
by roger blofeld
I've got a pmac running rawhide and have installed the
kernel-smp-2.6.11-1.1240_FC4 package. Trouble is, the 8250 serial
module is built-in, so I can't load the pmac_zilog module to use my
serial ports. From the syslog:
Apr 16 10:32:30 bert kernel: pmac_zilog: 0.6 (Benjamin Herrenschmidt
<benh(a)kernel.crashing.org>)
Apr 16 10:32:30 bert kernel: pmac_zilog: i2c-modem detected, id: 1
Apr 16 10:32:30 bert kernel: pmac_zilog: Error registering serial
device, disabling pmac_zilog.
Apr 16 10:32:30 bert kernel: pmac_zilog: Did another serial driver
already claim the minors?
I can tweek the "kernel-2.6.11-ppc-smp.config" and rebuild the kernel
to fix this, but is there another option? Shouldn't the ppc kernel have
8250 as a module so a "alias char-major-4 pmac_zilog" in my
modprobe.conf would do the right thing?
thanks
-roger

fsck.ext3 Unable to resolve 'Label=/'
by Curran, Dominic
Hi
On first boot after installations I get this error
"fsck.ext3 Unable to resolve `LABEL=/`.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):
(Repair filesystem) 1 #
Some other web sites suggest changing the line in /etc/fstab from
LABEL=/ to /dev/sda7.
But the 'Repair filesystem' is mounted read only so I can't edit any
files !?
Thanks

Hi.
cat /etc/modprobe.conf lists:

alias eth0 sungem
alias usb-controller ohci-hcd

As a side matter - do i have to add my modem to this list to get it recognised.
thanks.

VNCviewer
by Paul Cieslar
I have installed FC3 on my ibook, only 2 things i appear to be having problems with are sound and vncviewer.
The most important problem at the moment is the vncviewer. The only linux viewer I can find is desiged for i386 and therefore won't install.
Does anyone know where i can find a ppc viewer?
Thanks.

Dual display and compaible USB wireless iBook G4
by Andres Garcia
Hi everyone, I am running both FC3 and FC4T1 on my iBook 800 Mhz G4.
I've been using fedora for a while and I have been mucking with fedora
on PPC for a few months and posting on the ppc forums at
fedoraforum.org. I consider myself fairly well versed as i have solved
every other problem i've come up with (except the damn skin not showing
up in mplayer from the FC3 rpm i used). I am trying to set the ibook up
to use the vga out and to have wireless from a wireless adapter (since
the airport extreme is not uspported).
Does any one know any good, pref. cheap wireless usb adapters that are
compatible with fedora on PPC, I don't know much about usb wireless
adapters and I didn't see a list ? pref. one of the thumbdrive sized
ones or a smaller one with a little cable going to it. Can I basically
use any adapter that works on fedora x86?
Also. I am trying to get it set up to mirror the display to the video
out so I can hook it up to the KVM on my desk (which works, i can see
video on the display that looks like its from open firmware. . .
something about initializing fake display and "calling quiesce").
However I can't get xorg to seem to use the monitor, i have set up my
xorg.conf using system-config-display for dual monitor using the radeon
9200. everything looks good, and fairly similar to my x86 box, is this
just not supported on PPC. . . or this peice of hardware yet?
Thanks ahead for any input,
Andres Garcia
