* Is there a particular use-case or activity that might manifest this? Or exacerbate
this ?
* If that NPE is thrown, do you expect that exception to be caught and handled
properly?
* Is there anything that can be done now to mitigate this risk?

I just learned about a NIO bug[1] in the latest JDK 7u40 release that could impact RHQ.
The storage node makes extensive use of java.nio as does the client library used by the
RHQ server. Just something of which to be aware if you are running on Java 7 u40.
