Sigar getProcState bug on other platforms?
by Thomas Segismont
Hi,
Last week I may have found a bug in Sigar[1]. I think it does not only
affect Linux amd64 so I ask for your help to determine on which other
platforms it may be present.
I pushed a very simple project on GitHub[2]. You can fork it or simply
download source zip file.
Then open a terminal, go to the project directory and run:
# mvn clean package
# java -cp target/sigar/sigar.jar:target/classes/ test/ProcStateTest
If it runs silently then your platform may not be affected. Otherwise,
can you send me the error message and your platform type.
Of course if you think it's not a Sigar bug and that I missed something
please tell me. I had no response in Sigar user forum so far.
Thanks for your help!
Regards,
Thomas

Re: Re: question about custom server plugin
by Claudianus A
Hello Lucas
It is me again. Sorry about my previous post. I just tried to use the list
of map entry to allow user to define their own job instances and I noticed
that I didn't need to use the ControlFacet to create a new instance of the
job. So no need to respond to my previous email.
The only outstanding question is the one related to deployment.
Mainly I want to know what class is used to deploy the plugins from the
plugins folder under the JON server deployment. The reason I am asking this
is that I decided to use arquillian to test my plugin but I am getting a
module deployment error. The cause of the exception is that the
DeplomentManagerImpl ( included in the Jboss AS 4.2.3.GA used under JON
3.1.1) does not expect a jar as a deployable module but rather as a sub
module unless it is an ejb jar. There is no way to use that deployment
manager to do the deployment of the plugin to JBoss AS. So I figure you
guys are probably using something else to handle the deployment of those
plugins into the JON server. I just want to know what to use to get my
arquillian test to pass this hurdle.

Re: question about custom server plugin
by Claudianus A
Hello Lukas -
Thank you for the suggestion. I didn't think about that but now I do have a
follow up question because I think that it is a good idea.
How about this. Instead of using a single map to define the scheduled job I
can use the list (as done is the custom server plugin sample) and always
have a single map entry as a default. Then using the ControlFacet feature,
the user can add a new entry to the scheduled map list (which they will
have to fill out later).
So basically the idea is to use the ControlFacet's invoke method to insert
a new job schedule definition or whatever that is called and then allow the
user to set the parameters for that new entry under the server plugin
definition page.
Now the question is: I can get access to the Server plugin context but
what should I use to insert a new schedule definition record from the
invoke method within the Server Plugin Component? In other words is it
possible to programmatically modify the rhq-serverplugin.xml on runtime
(i.e. while the server is running)?
If so, are there APIs that I can use to do this (i.e. do the CRUD for the
job definition)? What I want to do is grab an existing record, clone it and
just change its name and save it as a new instance of the schedule, which
the user can later be presented with in order to set the parameter values
for that new job instance.
The reason I am going this way is that there is now way to know how many
records to insert to begin with and so having the option of adding or
deleting would be the best way to approach this.
Is this feasible with the current design of RHQ?
Note: if it will help I can send you my code so you can take a look at it
and see what I am talking about.
Also on another related note I have a question with regard to how the
server plugins are deployed. What class are you guys using to deploy the
plugins (i.e. when the plugin jars are placed in the plugins folder, what
class are you using to deploy them to the jboss as server). The reason I am
asking is that I am writing an arquillian test for my plugin and I am
having issues with the deployment manager that the arquillian container
adapter is using because it is not expecting a jar by itself as a
deployable module unless it is an ejb (which the server plugin are not) so
I was wondering about how you guys are doing this under the hood so I can
take a look and see how to work around that with Arquillian.

Re ---
I think that is not possible. There is always only a single instance of the
plugin running inside the server.
But what prevents you from handling multiple content sources from within
that
single instance? I obviously don't know your code and you probably have good
reasons for that - I just immediately don't see any hurdles on the RHQ side
that would prevent you from doing that.

RHQ Agent Multi-homed environment
by Ken Hancock
I'm getting the following error on installing rhq-agent on a
multi-homed windows server. It appears to be binding to the first
network interface instead of the second network interface which
happens to be the server-to-server interface.
2012-09-12 16:50:07,984 ERROR [RHQ Agent Registration Thread]

{AgentMain.agent-registration-rejected}The server has rejected the
agent registration request. Cause:
[org.rhq.core.clientapi.server.core.AgentRegistrationException:Server
cannot ping the agent's endpoint. The agent's endpoint is probably
invalid or there is a firewall preventing the server from connecting
to the agent. Endpoint:

I've configured my RHQ client with the server's bind address:
<entry key="rhq.agent.server.bind-address" value="192.168.XXX.XXX" />
Is there some other configuration I'm missing?
Thanks in advance,

Re: Re: question about custom server plugin
by Claudianus A
Hello Lukas -
Thank you for taking a look at my post.
I actually already looked at the script you referenced.
I have my plugin, which is ready and I already deployed it to my local JON
server but what I want to do is being able to run multiple instances of the
plugin (one for each content source the user wants to define).
My question is how to achieve that i.e. what setup do I need to be able to
configure more than one instance of the plugin in my current local JON
server?

question about custom server plugin
by Claudianus A
Hello all -
I have a question about custom server plugin. I just wrote a custom server
plugin to be used to monitor content repositories and automatically create
and add new bundles to JON. Basically the user is able to define the
content source (local or remote) they want to monitor and once content are
found they are bundled in added to JON.
Now I want to be able to allow the user to create a new instance of this
auto bundling plugin similar to how the user uses the new button to create
a new bundle.
Basically my goal is to allow the user to define a new one of this for each
content source (analogous to what a content source is in JON). For example
the user might have a local repository they want monitored on a daily basis
for new EAP bundle to be imported into JON or the user might want to
monitor a remote build server or a git repository for new artifacts to be
bundled and imported into JON several time a day based on a cron schedule.
My question is what else do I need to do the be able to either use the new
button on the bundle page to add this or create a page for my plugin so I
can do similar things to what is done on the bundle page?
I just need some pointers to what I need to modify to get this working.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

RHQ 4.6 beta
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hello,
we have just uploaded a snapshot from our internal build system (*) as a beta release of RHQ 4.6 to
source forge.
This build contains all the changes we made to swap out the old as4 as the underlying app server and
to replace it with as7. There are other changes like enhancements to the rest-api, Korean translations (**) ,
GWT updates or the new new installer.
Please download the release, try it and give us feedback. We intend to release a final 4.6 release
around the end of the month, so your feedback is very valuable to us.
You can get the release from https://sourceforge.net/projects/rhq/files/rhq/rhq-4.6.0-beta/
Follow the instructions on that wiki to run the installer: https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/RHQ/Installing+RHQ+on+JBossAS+7
Heiko on behalf of the RHQ team
*) We use the same system to build the releases, but just did not go through the steps to tag
the release and create a "named" build.
**) Those were unfortunately missing from the first version of the download, that is now fixed.

Metrics Collection - Help
by Stefan Negrea
Hello Everybody,
I just worked on estimating the amount of numeric metrics data collected by RHQ. I would appreciate a little feedback on the work I've done. This will help me get a better idea on the ratios of agent:raw metrics and agent:aggregate metric collected on real environments.
For all RHQ users with a Postgres backend, could you please run the query below on your RHQ database and reply with the result? The result is a set of three numbers: the number of agents, total number of aggregate metrics, and total number of raw metrics.
All the feedback is greatly appreciated, even if you are developer, plugin writer, casual tester or you just installed RHQ for a simple test.
The query:
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_agent UNION ALL
SELECT (
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_measurement_data_num_1h) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_measurement_data_num_6h) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_measurement_data_num_1D) ) UNION ALL
SELECT (
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r00) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r02) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r03) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r04) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r05) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r06) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r07) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r08) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r09) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r10) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r11) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r12) +
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM rhq_meas_data_num_r13) +

Here is what I got when I ran the query on my local box:
