Alert priority format
by Al Amyot
Our shop wants to send alert notifications to the BMC Remedy product
which can automatically create an incident ticket from the email.
Unfortunately it expects a simple numeric priority field not the "!!! -
HIGH" that RHQ puts out. Can anyone point us to the code that formats
this subject line? I have been unable to find it. This chunk of code
appears to build the email:
Map<String, String> alertMessage =
emailManager.getAlertEmailMessage(ancestry.get(resource.getId()), //
746
<http://git.fedorahosted.org/git?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=blob;f=modules/enterpri
se/server/jar/src/main/java/org/rhq/enterprise/server/alert/AlertManager
Bean.java#l746> resource.getName(), //
747
<http://git.fedorahosted.org/git?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=blob;f=modules/enterpri
se/server/jar/src/main/java/org/rhq/enterprise/server/alert/AlertManager
Bean.java#l747> alertDefinition.getName(), //
748
<http://git.fedorahosted.org/git?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=blob;f=modules/enterpri
se/server/jar/src/main/java/org/rhq/enterprise/server/alert/AlertManager
Bean.java#l748> alertDefinition.getPriority().toString(),
//
749
<http://git.fedorahosted.org/git?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=blob;f=modules/enterpri
se/server/jar/src/main/java/org/rhq/enterprise/server/alert/AlertManager
Bean.java#l749> new Date(alert.getCtime()).toString(), //
750
<http://git.fedorahosted.org/git?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=blob;f=modules/enterpri
se/server/jar/src/main/java/org/rhq/enterprise/server/alert/AlertManager
Bean.java#l750>
prettyPrintAlertConditions(alert.getConditionLogs(), false), //
751
<http://git.fedorahosted.org/git?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=blob;f=modules/enterpri
se/server/jar/src/main/java/org/rhq/enterprise/server/alert/AlertManager
Bean.java#l751> prettyPrintAlertURL(alert));
So it seems like the Priority class's toString() method builds it.
Our alternative to customizing the code is passing the email through
some sort of transforming filter. Suggestions are welcome!
I apologize if this is a newbie question - it's been a while since I
looked at the code and I only have rudimentary Java knowledge

Environment migration
by Steve Bicker
Hi,
I was wondering if there are any mechanisms within RHQ that provide a means
for migrating the data of an installation into a new environment? One thing
I am specifically concerned about is alert definitions- if there are many
alerts defined in one installation, say a development environment, is there
any way to have those imported into a fresh installation in a different
environment? It seems like it would be very painstaking and error-prone to
redefine these all from scratch through the GUI. What would be the best way
to go about this?
Any information is appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Dashboard/GUI questions
by Steve Bicker
Hi,
Is there any capability within RHQ that allows you to define your own
default dashboard for newly created users, or is the built-in dashboard
always the default? Or could there be any way to create a common dashboard
layout that can be shared across users?
I also have a question about RHQ's portlets and GUI components. I've
noticed that if you have something like a table of values, you have the
options to do things like sort and rearrange the table columns. However,
these changes are never kept if you leave the page and come back. I don't
suppose there is any means for persisting the modifications that are made
like this? In one troublesome example in particular, I use a table of
values as part of the user input within a custom resource's configuration
page. However, I would like the columns to always be in a particular order.
It seems that even if I define them in my preferred order within the plugin
descriptor, they will always display in alphabetical order on the page. Is
there any way around this?
Thanks!

Servers - Top Level Imports
by Jay Shaughnessy
Yesterday there was a lot of discussion (internally) around Servers vs.
Services and how to classify types. The result is that it's still
something of a vague semantic. In general, plugin developers tend to
declare a type a Server when it is backed by a discoverable process,
regardless of the parent type. For example, an RHQ Agent is a server as
it is a discoverable process, but so is the Agent's JVM. The
difference is that the Agent is available as a "Top Level Import",
meaning its parent is the platform and it must be explicitly imported
into inventory. The Agent's JVM is not. Its parent is the Agent
resource and it will be imported automatically.
But they are both server category resource types. The issue is that
Inventory->Servers can present a confusing resource list as it shows all
servers, and there can be several for one "top level import". It's
unlikely that there will be any change to the categories offered. And
type categorization will continue to be loosely defined and left to the
plugin developer.
So, I added a new Inventory option, currently named "Inventory->Servers
- Top Level Imports" to present a list of only servers that have
platforms as parents. In essence, the servers that the user chose to
import, and not their sub-server resources.
Try it out and let us know if it's useful, confusing, or should in some
way be improved.
Also remember to love your search bar. Saved Searches are powerful and
can get you to a specific resource list better than the generic options
on the left hand side. Another enhancement may be to make the saved
searches available in the LHS. Not sure how easy that may be to do...
