MySQL Connections
by JAVIER MANSO PEÑA
Hi
I'm having a problem with RHQ and MySQL plugin. As RHQ monitors MySQL, the number of connection in MySQL grow. It happens until MySQL max connections is reached. Then MySQL doesn't accept more connection.
How can I avoid this growth of connections in MySQL?
Best regards,
Javier

what hibernate management capabilities do you want?
by John Mazzitelli
(for those not in the #rhq irc room, I'm repeating here)
Steve Ebersole (lead for Hibernate) asked me for thoughts and ideas of
what kinds of management capabilities we'd like to see in hibernate
(hibernate v4 specifically). I told him I'd ask around, consolidate
ideas and send him an email with the thoughts. Post your ideas here and
I'll forward them along. Whatever he comes up with and implements, we
can later add to the RHQ Hibernate plugin functionality to make use of
the new Hibernate management capabilities.
Today, hibernate can emit stats and RHQ can monitor those - as I've
documented in my blog here:
http://management-platform.blogspot.com/2008/11/monitoring-hibernate-with...
Steve wants to expand hibernate's management capabilities. What kinds of
runtime management capabilities would people like to see from RHQ?
I'm thinking, at a minimum, Hibernate should have the ability to view
and change hibernate configuration properties.
I haven't used hibernate 4, so I'm not sure what additional features it
has above hib 3.
Hopefully, others here have some ideas - chime in if you do.

jon 2.4 and jboss soa-p
by John Holland
I have been trying to get JON 2.4 to see a SOA-P server. I have the
agent on the server and it is talking to JON, but it doesn't show any
sign of recognizing the SOA-P process. I installed what I believe to be
the right plugin into JON to enable it to discover the SOA-P but there
is no result. If anyone has experience with this and can advise me what
to do next I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
John Holland

Script plug-in metrics
by Al Amyot
The script plugin can apparently be used to capture metrics as well as
just test availability.
>From http://www.rhq-project.org/display/RHQ/Plugins+-+Script
You can also use the same type of mechanism to define how to invoke the
executable to obtain a certain set of metrics. You can define arguments
and a regular expression and based on what the executable returns (and
what the regex captures) would be the value of the metric data.
Can someone explain how this is done?

projects using RHQ
by Ian Springer
Fyi, we have a new page on the RHQ wiki to keep track of
projects/products that are using RHQ. If you are using RHQ to manage
your project or product, reply to this thread and we'll add it to the page.
Thanks.

Dampening and Availability
by Juliano Viana
Hi,
My colleague Lucas Silva asked this question a few days ago but
received no reply. So let me try to explain the problem in a different
way.
We are trying to use RHQ to monitor a number of HTTP servers. It works
all right except for the fact the link between the host that runs the
HTTP monitoring agent and the monitored servers is a bit unreliable.
This unreliability causes the RHQ agent to report some HTTP services
as down from time to time. Since the current metric collection
interval is 5 mins when the agent reports a server to be down it will
stay "down" for at least 5 mins.
We found out that most false positive alerts related to availability
appear as a 5-min downtime. So we would like to use alert dampening to
only alert if a resource availability goes down for 10 mins or more.
The problem is if we try to apply dampening to availability the alert
is never fired. It seems like since the Availability condition tracks
a change (Goes DOWN or Goes UP) the dampening rule never fires as the
alert never "Goes DOWN" two times in a row.
Ideally there should be a "is down" condition for alert metrics as
well as the transition ones. Is there any reason why they aren't
available?
Looking at the source code it seems like we can make some changes in
order to implement this. Is this the best course of action or are we
missing something obvious in regards to availability?
Regards,
- Juliano

Monitoring log files
by Al Amyot
According to the documentation, the Events system can be used to monitor
log files:
"The Events System supports event data streamed in from an agent and
attached to a resource. These events can be any type of useful
information and include a timestamp, a severity, the message and an
event source. The event source allows for a resource to have different
types of event data streamed in and allows the UI to let the user
filter.
A common use of the events system is to track important log file
messages. The Event System can be used to track log files for specific
messages matching severity and/or expressions to get the most useful
data. Included log tracking classes make it easy to support tailing log
files and turning messages into RHQ events. Events could also be created
from asynchronous messaging systems such as a JMX notification or a
messaging provider such as JMS."
How can this be used to monitor an applicaton's log file? E.g.
montioring the tail of the log file watching for Error messages.

How to use dampening rule with availability
by Lucas Silva
Hello,
I've got the following problem in monitoring a http, service my internet
connection presents issues in certain little
intervals of time, making the availabiltiy metric goes down, so the alert is
sent, but in a little while the avilability
goes up, making resource availability down in five minutes, because is the
minimun time of scan availability.
The question is how to avoid this issue? I've always have this problems
little intervals of availability down. When I set dampening rule i can't get
any alert, neither when is really down the resource. I can't set dampening
rule correctly to availability.
How can I use this?
Checking the log file I can see the error generated by the connection issue,
is the following
" ERROR [ResourceContainer.invoker.daemon-1230]
(org.rhq.plugins.netservices.HTTPNetServiceComponent)-
java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out" .
Any tips?
Thanks,
Lucas.
