Hi,
when I burn the 'boot.iso' file found in the 'images' direcory of Fedora 6's ppc DVD-image (FC-6-ppc-DVD.iso) to a CD, I can successfully boot from it with my iBook G4 (ppc-32). I have been trying to re-create a bootable image from it:
# mkdir boot; mount -o loop boot.iso boot # rm -rf boot-new; cp -rp boot boot-new # find boot-new -name TRANS.TBL -exec rm -f {} ; # volume_id="PBOOT"; system_id="PPC"; volume_set_id="6"; application_id="Fedora Core 6"; hfs_volume_id=$volume_set_id # mkisofs -V "$volume_id" -sysid "$system_id" -A "$application_id" -volset "$volume_set_id" \ -untranslated-filenames -joliet -rational-rock -translation-table \ -hfs -hfs-bless ppc -prep-boot ppc/chrp/yaboot -chrp-boot -part -hfs-volid "$hfs_volume_id" -no-desktop \ -quiet -o boot-new.iso boot-new Warning: creating filesystem that does not conform to ISO-9660. CHRP boot partition 1 PReP boot partition 2 is "ppc/chrp/yaboot"
# ls -l *.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 43642880 Oct 17 20:21 boot.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 43642880 Mar 30 00:35 boot-new.iso
As showed above, the new .iso has exactly the same size as the original one. However, when I burn that onto CD and try to boot from it -> no success. What am I missing?
thanks, rob.

You need to bless the ppc/mac directory, don't you? Not 'ppc'.
Run 'dir cd:,\' to get a listing of the blessed directory. There should be an 'ofboot.b' there and it should have type TBXI.

thanks David for your help. Running mkisofs with '-hfs-bless ppc/mac' instead of '-hfs-bless ppc' did also not make the resulting .iso bootable, unfortunately. Where can I run
dir cd:,\
? Within the Open Firmware console, it does not seem to work. When I input
dir
there, I get the response "can´t OPEN the DIR device". A little more detailed instructions on how to debug/solve my problem would be very useful.
Thanks!
rob.

Have you tried using the full path to these directories?

I have now been able to successfully run 'dir cd:,\' from the OF prompt (very cool - remotely via telnet) - don't know why I was not successful with this before my previous post, sorry for the noise.
With the CD inserted, burnt from the original "boot.iso": 1 > dir cd:,\
Size/ GMT File/Dir bytes date time TYPE CRTR Name 2050 10/17/ 6 20:21: 7 tbxi chrp ofboot.b 145068 10/17/ 6 20:21: 7 ???? ???? yaboot
However, the TYPE and CRTR are not correct on the CD burnt from the new "boot-new.iso":
1 > dir cd:,\
Size/ GMT File/Dir bytes date time TYPE CRTR Name 2050 10/18/ 6 2:21: 7 TEXT unix ofboot.b 145068 10/18/ 6 2:21: 7 TEXT unix yaboot
Here is my complete input/output for creating "boot-new.iso":
[root@fedora-ibook [__data__]]# test -d boot || mkdir boot [root@fedora-ibook [__data__]]# mount -o loop boot.iso boot [root@fedora-ibook [__data__]]# rm -rf boot-new; cp -rp boot boot-new [root@fedora-ibook [__data__]]# find boot-new -name TRANS.TBL -exec rm -f {} ; [root@fedora-ibook [__data__]]# volume_id="PBOOT"; system_id="PPC"; volume_set_id="6"; application_id="Fedora Core 6"; hfs_volume_id=$volume_set_id [root@fedora-ibook [__data__]]# mkisofs -volid "$volume_id" -sysid "$system_id" -appid "$application_id" -volset "$volume_set_id" \

Something still seems to be wrong/missing with the mkisofs options. Maybe is has to do with the "no Apple/Unix files will be decoded/mapped" warning? Please help.
Thanks! rob.

You'll need a map file - this is what we use in anaconda, use with -map.
This is what we use in fedora essentially:
mkisofs -o boot.iso -chrp-boot -U \ -prep-boot ppc/chrp/yaboot \ -part -hfs -T -r -l -J \ -A "Fedora 4" -sysid PPC -V "PBOOT" -volset 4 -volset-size 1 \ -volset-seqno 1 -hfs-volid 4 -hfs-bless $(pwd)/ppc/ppc \ -map mapping -magic magic -no-desktop -allow-multidot \ $(pwd)/ppc
Note the hfs-bless using a full path due to mkisofs wackiness.

Thank you Paul, Luciano and David - works now :-)
OK, "for the archives", to get the image bootable, 'ofboot.b' must be blessed as HFS in the CD's root directory, as type 'tbxi' (all-lowercase - 'TBXI' won't work!).
Since there is no need to have any other file than 'ofboot.b' to be associated with a certain type, I didn't use the full mapping table. I think this is a more elegant way and it just WORKS. Here is the full set of commands I have used:
test -d boot || mkdir boot mount -o loop boot.iso boot rm -rf boot-new; cp -rp boot boot-new find boot-new -name TRANS.TBL -exec rm -f {} ; echo "ofboot.b X 'chrp' 'tbxi'" > mapping volume_id="PBOOT"; system_id="PPC"; volume_set_id="6"; application_id="Fedora Core 6"; hfs_volume_id=$volume_set_id mkisofs -volid "$volume_id" -sysid "$system_id" -appid "$application_id" -volset "$volume_set_id" \ -untranslated-filenames -joliet -rational-rock -translation-table \ -hfs -part -hfs-volid "$hfs_volume_id" -no-desktop -hfs-creator '????' -hfs-type '????' -map "$(pwd)/mapping" \ -chrp-boot -prep-boot ppc/chrp/yaboot -hfs-bless "$(pwd)/boot-new/ppc/mac" \ -o boot-new.iso $(pwd)/boot-new
The output of mkisofs should then be something like: Warning: creating filesystem that does not conform to ISO-9660. Blessing mac (/full_path_to/boot-new/ppc/mac) CHRP boot partition 1 PReP boot partition 2 is "ppc/chrp/yaboot" 23.53% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 30 19:06:52 2007 46.95% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 30 19:06:52 2007 70.43% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 30 19:06:50 2007 93.89% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 30 19:06:51 2007 Total extents actually written (inc HFS) = 21160 (Size of ISO volume = 20213, HFS extra = 947) Total translation table size: 4617 Total rockridge attributes bytes: 3647 Total directory bytes: 16384 Path table size(bytes): 116 Max brk space used 0 21310 extents written (41 MB)
Best regards, rob.
Anyone tested the ppc boot.iso in RAW hide for Fedora Core 7. I've been netbooting to install as of recent. But I do rember it not being able to boot properly on my pseries workstation when I burned it to a CD. I think that the -map option may have been missing.

pSeries doesn't work that way -- it looks at /ppc/bootinfo.txt on the CD. I thought I'd tested it recently, but will do so again.

I saw that in the DVD image for Fedora Core 6 ppc, there is a "iSeries" directory within /ppc which does not exist anymore in the Prime DVD image for Fedora 6.92 ppc. Maybe that's the reason?
Another thing what I saw in the Fedora 6.92 image is that the volume ID is not set properly, because is has double quotes on the beginning and end of its string - '"Fedora 6.92 ppc DVD"' instead of 'Fedora 6.92 ppc DVD'.

You said pSeries, didn't you? So no.

Probably worth filing a bug against pungi for that.
Ok happened to try this today and things work fine. My JS20 blade got to yaboot & booted the kernel on the boot.iso image I burned to CD.
All is well.
