My guess is this probably has something to do with the SHA256 changes
that went into yum etc around that time. Fedora 10's tooling probably
wouldn't have been able to generate it and then your F12 clients would
require that metadata in yum.

Same box is now upgraded to Fedora 11, reposync was run again, and now
the repos work fine both from f12 and from f11 updating to f12.
So, it seems the f10 versions of the tools can't handle some aspect of
the f12 packages.
