My first clue that this might be non-trivial was the date in the filename.

It wants to have writable strings ?? How horribly 1980's, and too bad gcc
no
longer accepts that, that means that we need to find and fix all cases
where
string writing happens :(
I'll take a peek to see how much work this is going to be.
