Hi All,
Here in Karnataka, we are trying to get support from Kannada development
authority and other organizations to help us open up dictionaries developed
by universities and other cultural organizations. Response to the request
is positive but we are yet to see the first set being released in public
domain. Kannada wiktionary has around 2.5 lac words.
Hi Fellas,
Wiktionary <
https://www.wiktionary.org/> is a wonderful effort and it has
a free dictionary, licensed CC BY-SA 3.0, for almost all major languages;
but we can work to improve it and make it more accessible. They have
imported the contents from dictionaries in Public domain (such as 'Winslow,
Miron. A comprehensive Tamil and English dictionary of high and low Tamil.
Madras: P.R. Hunt, 1862.')
Even most of University of Chicago's Digital Dictionaries of South Asia
<
http://dsal.uchicago.edu/dictionaries/>is licensed under a Creative
Commons license (but a BY-NC-ND 2.0). I am not sure that this license
allows us leverage the full potential of dictionary, though.
I feel that it would be wise to collaborate or work closely with a project
that shares similar goal rather than working on a new dictionary database
from scratch. Omegawiki or Wiktionary might be the projects most suitable
for us to work with.

Being a FOSS person, I can understand the importance of avoiding duplicacy
of efforts. Though I also feel that if anybody else is creating a resources
in open license somewhere different place, that is also important as well
as it strengthens the ecosystem of FOSS itself. Can we discuss it more
during FUEL GILT Conference 2015 -
http://fuelproject.org/gilt2015/index .
Just an idea, in the conference ^^, I wonder if someone can present about
success story of a specific language's Wiktionary project (importance and
challenges), possibly from Indic language. if anybody interested, please
submit a talk.
FUEL Project is a FOSS Project and it is guided by the wish of community.
So lets discuss in detail and work towards to make a great resources. Indic
language, we have dearth of good linguistic resources online.
thanks.
