Minor changes in devel branch, ksdevice=bootif, ipappend 2
by Michael DeHaan
I've changed the default templates and settings to use ksdevice=bootif
and ipappend 2 in the devel branch.
This should simplify some multiple network setups.
Heads up :)
If you do not like this option you can still use your old settings file
or edit /etc/cobbler/settings to use whatever you like, as well as
editing the templates used to generate the PXE configuration in
/etc/cobbler/pxe*.template
For those that are wondering what this is about, see the Fedora
documentation:
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/f9/en_US/sn-Installer.html
5.3.3. Multiple NICs and PXE Installation
Some servers with multiple network interfaces may not assign |eth0| to
the first network interface as BIOS knows it, which can cause the
installer to try using a different network interface than was used by
PXE. To change this behavior, use the following in |pxelinux.cfg/*|
config files:
IPAPPEND 2
APPEND ksdevice=bootif
The configuration options above cause the installer to use the same
network interface as BIOS and PXE use. You can also use the following
option:
ksdevice=link
This option causes the installer to use the first network device it
finds that is linked to a network switch.

rPath support
by khan_don@emc.com
Hello,
Is anyone using cobbler to deploy rPath based distributions. This has a
kickstart based installer but uses conary instead of rpm. I'm just
trying to see if anyone is using this as Google did not turn up any good
links. In either case I tried to import an rPath install cd and the
import seemed to work as I was able to pxeboot to the kickstart menus.
Maybe this will work.
Thanks.

I hope this patch will actually work. Please, ignore any of my previous
patches, which should be easy enough since it didn't work to begin with.
If this patch doesn't work, I might be doing something wrong with git,
and help will be appreciated.

Selecting Snippets
by Simon Woolsgrove
Is it possible to select a snippet using a variable e.g. SNIPPET::$mysnippet ? When I try this nothing is loaded even though the variable is set, I am guessing cheetah/cobbler is not rendering these ?
I want a way to pass application configs and user contributed scripts into %post without having to generate a profile for each due to the number of different combinations.
Currently I am passing the requested configs via --ksmeta "appconfig=fred" and using #include $appconfig ... the imported files still appear to be rendered by cheetah, is there any difference between an #include vs SNIPPET ?
Cheers,
Simon

Re: koan --replace-self without DHCP
by Simon Woolsgrove
Thanks Tom, was using the earlier koan, tested now with 1.2 but the same result
# koan -s cobbler --replace-self
...
- ['/sbin/grubby', '--add-kernel', '/boot/vmlinuz', '--initrd', '/boot/initrd.img', '--args', 'ksdevice=eth0 lang= text ks=http://cobbler/cblr
/svc/op/ks/system/fred kssendmac ', '--copy-default', '--make-default', '--title=kick12
21732788']
However I did notice the -k option so running
# koan -s cobbler -k ks=file:/ks.cfg --replace-self
....
- ['/sbin/grubby', '--add-kernel', '/boot/vmlinuz', '--initrd', '/boot/initrd.img', '--args', 'ksdevice=eth0 lang= text ks=file:/ks.cfg kssendmac ', '--copy-default', '--make-default', '--title=kick1221735005']
Which gives me what I need and the build will complete without any interaction, putting the IP details on the boot line is an option, but this seems simpler ...
Cheers,
Simon

The IP info should be on the grub line - what versions of koan/cobbler
are you using as some early 1.0 koan's had a bug i seem to remember
> I just tried using koan --replace-self on a system (physical) that uses a static IP, using the network snippet the ks.cfg contains all the correct info, from koan I see the ks.cfg file gets embedded in the initrd, however grub gets populated with ks=http://x.x.x.x.x rather than file:/tmp/ks.cfg this means the replace goes interactive as the host needs an IP to get the ks.cfg... or I am missing something ?

Using cobbler for deploying filesystem/disk images?
by khan_don@emc.com
Hello,
Is it possible to use cobbler to deploy filesystem/partition/disk
images, e.g. images made from g4l or clonezilla. I'd like to use the
cobbler as the single server for deploying images via pxe boot. With
images I'll also have to deal with drivers of different geometries but
clonezilla has code to do that. Is using such images faster than
deploying via kickstart for a large number of machines (hundreds).

koan --replace-self without DHCP

I just tried using koan --replace-self on a system (physical) that uses a static IP, using the network snippet the ks.cfg contains all the correct info, from koan I see the ks.cfg file gets embedded in the initrd, however grub gets populated with ks=http://x.x.x.x.x rather than file:/tmp/ks.cfg this means the replace goes interactive as the host needs an IP to get the ks.cfg... or I am missing something ?

New tool: /usr/bin/cobbler-setup
by Michael DeHaan
Partha contributed a nice script yesterday that is designed to make
cobbler even easier to install, so I wanted to post to the list about it
since the original patch bounced off the mailing list. This new
program is installed by the RPM as /usr/bin/cobbler-setup and is
designed for new installations only.
I've tweaked his patch somewhat for
style/output/control-flow-of-questions and also packaged it.
There are a couple bugs in it presently
-- /usr/share/cobbler/installer_templates/*.template are based on an old
version of cobbler so are missing newer settings
-- Some installer choices like the authn/authz modules result in errors
when I try to type in the values (I am pretty sure I broke this myself)
-- It could do a bit more to ensure things reported by cobbler check are
fixed prior to running check -- service started/chkconfig status, making
sure /etc/xinet.d/tftpd is enabled, etc.
-- I've also added some FIXME's in the cobbler-setup file (saved under
"scripts/" in git) about checking for return codes and switching over to
subprocess.
This is somewhat Red Hat specific at this point, other distributions
would not have to package it.
Basically we're building an installer so that we call it from within the
Spacewalk/Satellite installer, which is somewhat interactive.
For those that don't like interactive installers, editing settings and
modules.conf directly is still 100% supported and will continue to be
that way, this is mainly there to help the folks who don't have the time
to read up on Cobbler.
I'd appreciate folks looking at the questions asked to see if they make
sense -- currently it doesn't ask about /all/ the questions it could
ask, but is intended to just set up the basics, with the thought if
users want they can ask for more details later -- we certaintly don't
want to make anyone feel like they are compiling Perl or the kernel :)
Partha, if you can take care of the templates being backdated and fix
the FIXMEs, that would be appreciated, though I've gone ahead and
committed this to git. The biggest problem right now is that the
DHCP/DNS questions (or any of those that take an enumerated answer) seem
to not be taking user input.
Much appreciated, Thanks!

cobbler_api_rw: 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable
by warren.puziewicz@realtimeworlds.com
Hi,
I've got a new default install of CentOS 5.2 on which I am trying to get
Cobbler installed. I can get the service running, but clicking any link
(other than DOCS) on the menu results in a python error message. It
appears that cobbler_api and cobbler_api_rw are being blocked, but I
can't figure out how. SELinux is off, firewall is off. Attempts to
navigate to http://<server>/cobbler_api
<http://%3cserver%3e/cobbler_api> results in Service Temporarily
Unavailable. I've searched Google, but have not found anything that
has helped.
Any troubleshooting help would be greatly appreciated.
Clicking any menu option results in Cobbler web ui displaying:

Installing Cobbler, Advanced Topics
by Chris O'Regan
Hi,
I am building a pair of provisioning servers and I need a hand with some
of the details regarding setting things up.
The pair of servers is intended for fault tolerance. I want to ensure
that I always have at least one provisioning server available,
especially if I need to rebuild or upgrade one of the provisioning
servers! :-)
We have a Netapp that I would like to use for sharing the data between
the two servers, however I have just noticed this warning in the wiki
page titled "Relocating Your Install":
"ALSO NOTE: /var/lib/cobbler can not live on NFS, as this interferes
with locking ("flock") cobbler does around it's storage files."
I actually have everything on the filer on my development server and I
have not encountered any problems. If this just means that only one of
my servers can write out the configuration files then that is a
sufficient compromise. Note that I don't think I will be using the web
interface for managing the cobbler configuration, configuration changes
aren't likely to happen very often, and I will probably be the only
person making changes. I suspect that locking issues aren't going to be
too big of a deal.
The web server will be chrooted. I don't think this will be a problem
since, if I understand correctly, it will contact cobblerd via XMLRPC. I
am considering putting cobblerd into the chroot as well. Are there any
issues running cobbler/cobblerd as a non-root user?
Anything else that I am missing?
