cups/system-config-printer ppd file - removing?
by Jonathan Underwood
Hi
Is it possible to remove ppd files after they have been imported with
system-config-printer - i.e. remove them from the list of printers that
one sees in system-config-printer? Or, in other words, where is the
information that system-config-printer is using to generate the list of
printers?
Cheers,

This was a memory corruption problem that was found late in the
FC4 release cycle. Update will take care of this...

squid proxy question
by freejay@tri-isys.com
Hi,
I noticed that whenever I go to a particular ftp site (e.g.
ftp://ftp.somewhere.com), using my browser, it returns an error message. This
happens whenever the proxy server is enabled in my browser. There is a
firewall between my machine and the internet and it is configured to allow my
PC to perfrom ftp download from any ftp site. I was able to do a workaround
for this by putting ftp.somewhere.com in the browser's proxy setting's
exceptions list. But I'm thinking this is so much hassle just to add URLs at
the exceptions list. Is there a way to configure it in the proxy server's
side so that I do not have to add URL's in the exceptions list? Thanks

Evolution - Leafnode: how do they work together?
by Gianluca Turconi
Hi *,
I post here a message I originally sent to some usenet groups without
answer. I hope I've more luck in this list. :) If it's a question already
answered please point me to the right web resources.
***original message***
I'm trying to use Evolution 2.2 email client and leafnode newsserver on a
single PC.
I've used leafnode since RH 8.0 with other clients and it worked really
fine. On Fedora Core 4 the newsserver works with each client I tested
(knode, pan, mozilla mail and thunderbird) exept Evolution, which I'd
like to use both for mail and news even if it has not many advanced
features.
Here what I did so far:
1) I've compiled leafnode 1.11.3 from sources (i've tried the rpm provided
by FC extras with no luck too :(
2) I've changed hosts.allow and hosts.deny acconding to the sources
instructions.
In hosts.allow I added:
leafnode: 127.0.0.1
In hosts.deny:
leafnode: ALL
When I used the rpm version I commented the two lines above out and used
this script for xinetd:
service nntp
{
disable = no
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = news
server = /usr/sbin/leafnode
bind = 127.0.0.1
}
3) I can connect to my remote newsserver (with a password access) and
download newsgroup list and articles.
4) I can locally connect Evolution to leafnode server on 127.0.0.1 and
download newsgroup list and articles.
5) I'm **really** not able to locally post a new article or reply to an
old one from Evolution. My messages simply disappear once sent!!!
I was used to find the outgoing messages into /var/spool/news/out.going
directory. With other clients my messages are there and they are remotely
posted when leafnode connects to the Internet. Instead with Evolution, I
don't know where they go.
This is what I read in my reply's headings (I read them in the message
copy I found in the "sent" folder of Evolution) to another usenet user's
message I can locally see.
X-Evolution-PostTo: nntp://127.0.0.1/it.test
X-Evolution-Format: text/plain
X-Evolution-Account: 1125408653.17990.0(a)localhost.localdomain
X-Evolution-Transport: smtp://<name of my smtp provider>/;use_ssl=never
X-Evolution-Fcc: mbox:/home/gt/.evolution/mail/local#Sent
I posted this reply from Evolution to leafnode and
literally vanished.
It seems Evolution is trying to use smtp protocol to post to the local
newsserver and it's really strange, since I don't receive any error
message from Evolution client while the post should be rejected. In
addition, leafnode should reject it because of the
"@localhost.localdomain" part (this is another issue I'll try to solve
once I'll succeed in having at least an error message from Evolution...)
I've spent several hours googling with no success, so anybody has any
hints? Is Evolution usable as newsreader at all? (BTW, I've not discovered
how to post a new message to a newsgroup. Evolution opens the new mail
editor and still use the smtp protocol with my news account!
Thanks in advance for any help.
Best Regards,
Gianluca

dvips options
by Michael A. Peters
To go from latex to pdf I use dvips and the adobe online encoding.
I can't use pdflatex or PDFTex because my documents use gnuplot
generated tex files that contain postscript (this allows me to have
LaTeX render the text part of the graphs, and makes it easier to adjust
the axis labeling, which on 3D plots sometimes conflict with the axis
and need to be moved, depending upon the view perspective).
I go from ps to pdf via Adobe online encoding because sometimes
ghostscript (ps2pdf) messes up, and you often can't tell until you have
printed it - but sometimes its really obvious (like putting letters on
top of each other). Distiller (online encoding) gets it right.
I have a prosper class latex document (PDF slide show). It needs to be
A4 landscape.
It also must be done dvi -> pd -> pdf because prosper uses pstricks
When I use dvips -Ppdf
I get a landscape but it is letter, right side of slides chopped.
If I use dvips -Ppdf -t a4
It does get done a4 by online - but portrait, so I have to rotate it to
properly view it.
If I use dvips -Ppdf -t a4 -t landscape
I still get portrait A4
-=-
Does anyone know either
a) A proper option sequence to give to dvips to get A4 landscape out of
Adobe online encoding
b) A proper way to modify the output of dvips (the postscript file) to
make sure it really is landscape a4
c) A way to modify an existing PDF file so that it is landscape by
default
Either one of those (a would obviously be best) would solve my problem.
Thanks for suggestions.

ATI & nVidia
by Robert Bell
I think I'm finally going to ditch my Radeon in favor of an nVidia card.
Can someone recommend an nvidia card comparable to my Radeon 9800 that
plays nice with FC4?

weired keycodes in xorg-x11 of fedora core 4
by JHB
hi,
I found xorg-x11 server reports wrong keycodes in Fedora core 4 on:
kernel: 2.6.12-1.1447_FC4
glib: glib-1.2.10-16
glib2: glib2-2.6.4-1
xorg-x11: 6.8.2-37.FC4.45
iiimf-x: 12.2-4.fc4.2
And, keyboard configurations of my 'xorg.conf' are:
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
My system setting is:
LANG=ko_KR.eucKR
XMODIFIERS=@im=iiimx
While key pressed, X server reports wrong key codes of following keys:
key symbols gdkkeysyms.h actual
-------------- ----------- -----------------
GDK_KP_Home 0xFF95 0xffb7, KP_7
GDK_KP_Left 0xFF96 0xffb4, KP_4
GDK_KP_Up 0xFF97 0xffb8, KP_8
GDK_KP_Right 0xFF98 0xffb6, KP_6
GDK_KP_Down 0xFF99 0xffb2, KP_2
GDK_KP_Prior 0xFF9A 0xffb9, KP_9
GDK_KP_Next 0xFF9B 0xffb3, KP_3
GDK_KP_End 0xFF9C 0xffb1, KP_1
GDK_KP_Begin 0xFF9D 0xffb5, KP_5
GDK_KP_Insert 0xFF9E 0xffb0, KP_0
GDK_KP_Delete 0xFF9F 0xffae, KP_Decimal
GDK_Print 0xFF61 0xff20, Multi_key
These weird behaviors are observed all xlib, gtk2 and gtk programs.
It seems not related with specific locale or language module because it
is still occurred when I set system locale to en_US. How can I solve
this problem?

strange nfs problem
by Neil Dugan
Hi,
I have just installed FC4 (minimum install) on a computer I intend to
setup as a server.
When I went to enable the NFS, I can't get it to work properly.
The important error message is :=
# /etc/init.d/nfs start
# tail /var/log/messages
Sep 2 13:18:40 mini-cl exportfs[2524]: can't open /etc/exports for reading
Sep 2 13:18:40 mini-cl kernel: Installing knfsd (copyright (C) 1996 okir(a)monad.swb.de).
Sep 2 13:18:40 mini-cl kernel: SELinux: initialized (dev nfsd, type nfsd), uses genfs_contexts
Sep 2 13:18:40 mini-cl rpc.idmapd: nfsdreopen: Opening '' failed: errno 2 (No such file or directory)
And on the client use
# mount mini-cl:/mnt/storage storage
mount: mini-cl:/mnt/storage failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
# exportfs -a
# tail /var/log/messages
Sep 2 13:21:30 mini-cl exportfs[2592]: can't open /etc/exports for reading
# ls -l /etc/exports
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27 Sep 2 11:46 /etc/exports
# cat /etc/exports
/mnt/storage 192.168.0.0/16(rw)
# cat /etc/hosts.deny
portmap:ALL
# cat /etc/hosts.allow
portmap: 192.168.
If I use exportfs to bypass the /etc/exports file with
# exportfs -o rw 192.168.0.0/16:/mnt/storage
and on the client use
# mount mini-cl:/mnt/storage storage
Every thing works fine.
Any help appreciated.
Regards Neil.
