Virtualbox vs VMware for Fedora?
by Sbob
All;
I am running Fedora39, I have run VMware workstation for years, and I
have on and off had issues since VMware does not officially support
Fedora, normally I run a patch after each kernel update and it mostly
just works.
I am also running the osx unlocker so I can run mac VM's
I recently tried virtualbox on a spare laptop, havent looked at
virtualbox in years, and I was impressed, a few questions for the community:
- can I run the osx unlocker with virtualbox?
- does virtualbox have the same issues where it needs a patch after
each kernel and sometimes
just breaks with a new kernel , even with the patch?
Thanks in advance

Tried it but no success. I am looking for differences, and System.map is biggger in 6.6.6-* kernel

rfkill??
by Beartooth
Updating F39 just now on a laptop, I got a request for root to
authorize rfkill. I had just also updated F39 on a PC, with no such
request. (Both machines are connected to a KVM switch and a router by
cables, not wireless.)
I didn't authorize it, and shut the laptop down.
Is there something I should do next??

Update failed: gstreamer1-plugins-ugly
by Frank Elsner
Hello,
How can I solve this problem?
Error: Transaction test error:
file /usr/lib64/gstreamer-1.0/libgstasf.so from install of gstreamer1-plugins-ugly-free-1.22.8-2.fc39.x86_64 conflicts with file from package gstreamer1-plugins-ugly-1:1.22.7-1.fc39.x86_64
This is not the only file involved in this gstreamer1 update.

Replacing and mirroring boot drive
by Javier Perez
Hi.
I need some guidance here.
I want to replace the boot drive of a computer and then add a second drive
to create a Raid1 system for the boot and / filesytem. For now, home will
stay where it its, on a separate drive for now.
The Boot drive is old. It is a Crucial SSD about 8 years old.
It holds the /boot/efi directory on a small FAT partition, the /boot
partition on an EXT4 partition and the root (/) on a btrfs partition.
/home is on another, HDD and larger drive with a btrfs partition.
This is a home computer and not kind of mission critical.
Here come my questions.
1. Can I move everything on the SSD to a new SSD with everything under
btrfs? From what I have been reading it seems like /boot/efi still needs to
be on a vfat partition, but /boot could be moved into btrfs. Would it still
need a different partition or can it live within the same partition with
the / filesystem?
2. I understand from what I have been reading that btrfs has Raid1
capabilities therefore I could add the second drive and from btrfs add it
to the partition as a mirror. But if vfat has to exist for the /boot/efi,
how am I supposed to mirror it?
I have read some articles but they seem kind of old (more than 3 years) and
it seems like the way Fedora does it is not a standard way. I'd rather not
have to use a hardware RAID controller.
I would appreciate your insights.
Thanks

xfig
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
Before (I do not not exactly, maybe fedora 37), I was able to
generate .pstex files from xfig (export language combined PS/Latex (both parts),
but now I get
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
*** buffer overflow detected ***: terminated
I get pstex only and not the pstex_t file
xfig 3.2.9
Some ideas ?

sudo problem on restore from archive
by Robert McBroom
On a system restore from a tar archive sudo won't work. Says
/usr/bin/sudo needs to be owned by 0 with the suid bit set. Root owns
the file and is 0. Looking at a working system directory list shows
-rwsr-xr-x. 1 root root 57456 Aug 16 20:00 su
---s--x--x. 1 root root 202872 Jul 24 20:00 sudo
How does that s bit get set?

Thinkpad screen is squeezed when plugging 3rd monitor
by Frederic Muller
Hi!
I've had the problem with F38 but it would go off after 1 (sometimes 2)
reboot. It did work earlier this week but as my laptop crashed I did a
fresh reinstall. Everything is working well except for this:
I have a X1 carbon to which I connect 3 external monitors. When I
connect the 3rd one (which ever is third has no importance), the main
(laptop) screen is squeezed vertically and the mouse clicks like if the
screen was normal (so I need to target a bit off to the right). And
since a picture is worth a thousand words... here are the comparison
between 2 and 3 connected external monitors:
https://imgur.com/a/smMGE5M
As I said it actually was working fine before the reinstallation and I'd
like to avoid doing that again. Can anyone help me to troubleshot and
eventually fix the problem?
Thank you very much.

Network: Limited Connectivity since upgrade to Fedora 39
by Klaus-Peter Schrage
Recently, I did an upgrade to F39 via dnf system-upgrade. For the first
time in Fedora (I think I started around version 1), on booting into KDE
I get a message saying "limited network connectivity", which means, my
wired network is up but can't reach the outside world.
The journals tell me that the name resolution is not working (see
attached log). I didn't find out why it failed, but restarting
systemd-resolved usually cures the problem. The problem that the service
fails on startup still remains, but not on every boot. Sometimes, say in
10 % of bootings, the problem doesn't occur.
If those things matter:
- Desktop computer with KDE-Plasma (X11)
- kernel 6.6.8-200.fc39.x86_64
- NIC: Intel 82574L with kernel driver e1000e
I have the faint idea thast there might be a race condition between
services on startup,
Any pointers to debug that further would be welcome.

I have a hard time believing this was done by a Red Hat employee at Red Hat’s behest, since Red Hat is mostly concerned with GNOME and the vlc change was being included in a KDE change.
This accusation is being thrown around, as some sort of malicious action. It was, at best, poor communication between Fedora packagers and RPMfusion, and delays in packages being released during a period when many people are spending time with their family and not paying attention to packaging drama.
