OT - Browsers, Linux and cybersleuths.
by Robin Laing
I debated posting this but my anti-IE side won the battle.
For those that "don't read slashdot (/.)."
Alternative Browsers Impede Investigations

Basically, some law enforcement officials don't like the trend to move
to anything but IE as they "don't" know where and how to look through
the history data.
The one comment on /. that I liked is.

I love it. Think of the advertising potential.
Male voiceover
"Microsoft, used by 100% of all sex offenders. Its not only the law, it
their punishment."
Oh! I just fell off my chair.

There are some interesting points into why the authorities are having a
problem reading the history data in the /. thread.
And the original article.

Fubar'd grub installing Debian Sarge
by David Niemi
I tried installing debian to a second hard drive, not letting it touch my FC4 install except when it came to grub install, I
let it modify the grub installation (silly me) that took me a while to get going right in FC4! Now I get an error 17, and am
trying to setup grub again using Knoppix 4 DVD, so far so good, gonna test it shortly.
The point of this message: I installed debian to the second Hd (/dev/hdd1, I've also 2 SCSI RAID 0 disks which in FC are 1 &
2 = md0), should I mark the partition that I installed debian to as active / bootable as this partition contains the Debian
/boot ? I didn't split up the install to numerous partitions, just one for simplicity (Ya Right).

Error updating new FC4 install, dependency error
by Robert P. J. Day
with a new FC4 install, and active repos "base", "updates-released"
and "extras", i get:
Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies
Error: Package GFS-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4, this
is not available.
Error: Package gnbd-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4, this
is not available.
Error: Package dlm-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4, this
is not available.
Error: Package cman-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4, this
is not available.
googling brought me here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/358249
which, as you can see, was hilariously uninformative in terms of
explaining what the problem and subsequent fix was.
thoughts?

multiple smb domains at once?
by Les Mikesell
Is it possible to configure PAM to check passwords via SMB against
more than one windows domain? The users in question have
local accounts on the Linux box but the passwords are currently
being check against a single windows domain. Now the windows
admins are moving people to a different domain and for the
transition, I'd like to let people log in if their login
and password matches in either domain. Authconfig sets up
one. How would I add another?

OK, I have a strange one for you - grub
by jdow
I need some help with an obscure problem that I think grub can solve.
I have a motherboard that has replaced an old ECS board that blew its
caps. It's an FIC motherboard which refuses to boot off the main IDE
hard disk when the Promise raid system that the machine should have is
installed. We desperately need to get data off the Promise card.
So the kicker is I must chain load to the /dev/hd0 boot from a floppy
to overcome the BIOS's attempt to boot from the RAID array. (It was
present solely to store audio files.)
I can create a floppy with stage1 and stage2 per the documentation.
But I am creating it NOT on the system that I must boot. So what I
need to know is what next steps are necessary to create a floppy
which will chain on over to boot off the MBR of /dev/hd0. There
seems to be missing steps in the grub documentation in this regard.
Is this even possible?
And if not, is it possible with lilo instead?
