Sticknotes applet quirks
by Kevin Old
Hello everyone,
I moved my .gnome2/stickynotes_applet file over from my FC 2 backup to
my FC 3 machine and put the StickyNotes link on my gnome panel.
The problem is when I loging to Gnome, all the stickynotes are
automatically launched. When I right click on the stickynotes icon,
Show Notes is not checked. I have to check it, then uncheck it for
the notes to be hidden.
I've looked at all the preferences and even went into
Preferences->More Preferences->Sessions and under the Current Sessions
tab, removed stickynotes_applet.
Still after saving my session and logging out of Gnome, when I login
back in, the stickynotes automatically launch.
Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas how to solve it?
Thanks,
Kevin

Rage 128 - FC3 Testing Needed
by Warren Togami
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=138822
System freezes after logout (Rage 128) unless you disable DRI. If you
are a FC3 user with Rage 128 video, your assistance in testing is
required for this issue. Even if you do not experience this issue on
your Rage 128, your testing would be greatly appreciated in order to
avoid introducing a possible regression.
http://people.redhat.com/wtogami/temp/xorg/
i386 packages with a candidate fix for this issue can be downloaded from
here.
Please answer these questions when you report your findings:
1) Does your entire FC3 system lockup after logging out from a GNOME
session and X restarts?
2) Does the above packages solve this problem?
3) Does the above packages introduce any new problems?
Thanks,
Warren Togami

Hello,
I'm using t-bird under FC2 for newsgroup access. How can I filter out
cross-posted messages? Is there another client that can do this?
Thanks,

by Peter Lesterhuis
Hello list,
I feel like moving one step forward and three steps backward.
How should I edit yum.conf? When I open yum.conf in gedit and make a few
changes I cann't save the file bacause of an error message.
Should I be logged in as root in gedit? How does one become root in gedit?
Thanks, Peter Lesterhuis.

Repost: FC3: Static on VIA AC97 Audio Controller
by Philip A. Chapman
Everyone,
This is a repost. I don't normally do these. However I am really hoping
that there is someone on the list that can help me with this. I have
not been able to google an answer. Nor has my own limited skills been
of any use. I am hoping that someone with suggestions or answers is
reading this list today that wasn't reading it late Monday night.
I have a laptop which has a VIA Tech sound chip. The Chip is identified
as "VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC Audio Controller" in /etc/sysconfig/hwconfig.
The snd-via82xx module is being used for this chip.
When I play .ogg files through winamp or ogg123, I get sound that is low
volume and has a lot of static. I get the same results when I use
playwave to play a .wav file. I believe this issue is caused by not
having a volume control for the "PCM" input. I have used the gnome
volume control panel and aumix, but cannot control the volume to PCM,
only mute it. I have come to this conclusion after playing DVDs. I had
the exact same issue with DVD audio until I located the second "VIA DXS"
slider (there are a total of 4 sliders with this label) and increased it
considerably (A little over half way). I might mention that on FC1, and
FC2, I did not have this issue. On none of the 3 FC releases have the
"Master" volume control worked. I typically set the input control
fairly high, then use the volume control wheel on the front of my laptop
to adjust the volume to my headphones (or crappy built in speakers). I
do not know whether the master volume control works on Windows as I do
not use this laptop for windows. I've always assumed that the chip does
not support it because of the manual volumn control wheel.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Are there any solutions.
Please forgive me for the repost. If I still get no answers, I will NOT
continue to repost.

Have you applied the 6-month old patch in
<http://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=591>?
Will it ever be applied?

kernel-2.6.9-1.678 can't find label
by Bruce Bennett
When booting the FC3 kernel upgrade (kernel-smp-2.6.9-1.678_FC3), I get
> [nash ... starting]
> mkrootdev: label / not found
> mount: error 2 mounting ext3
> mount: error 2 mounting none
> switchroot: mount failed: 22
> umount: /initrd/dev/ failed: 2
> Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init
Yet when running the original (2.6.9-1.667smp) FC3 kernel I get
findfs LABEL=/
/dev/sda6
...naturally enough, since I'm able to boot the original and do this
there. :^)
I see nothing unusual about my /boot/grub/grub.conf:
------------------------------------------------------------
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this
file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/sda6
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora Core (2.6.9-1.678_FC3smp)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.678_FC3smp ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-1.678_FC3smp.img

SATA? Yes: /dev/sda is ATA ST380013AS (ata_piix, ICH5).
Same problem with non-smp 2.6.9-1.678_FC3, BTW, and, yes, if I make
root=/dev/sda6 in grub.conf the new kernels remain unbootable.
Anyone else seeing this?

Hello,
I can't find the applet to allow adding or modifying file types and
actions. I can do for a single file under its properties but it only
takes affect for the one file. I want to define some new type and
actions. How do i do that. Its not on the menu like I found under
previous version of gnome.
