Dump/restore
by Jesse Jarzynka
Ok, I have noticed that Core 3 no long has a swap partition and now
only has 2 partitions,a boot and a LVM partition. This hasn't been a
problem until i tried to dump/restore. As a business once we get Linux
all configured we like to just dump/restore it to a whole different HD
all configured the way we do it. However Core 3 is not working as core 2
has. I don't think there could be a problem with either hard drive, has
anyone else tried this with core 3? It's worked with every other Linux
o/s we've ever used except core 3.
$ dump -0uf - /dev/hdb1 | restore xf -

problem with vncserver on fc3
by Basil Copeland
I have vncserver running on fc3 opening a Xfce4
session, after a fashion. What is not working right
is it loading automatically at startup. vncserver is
checked in the system-config-services applet. But at
startup, it fails with the message
vnc server is already runing as :1
I get that message with /etc/sysconfig/vncservers
loading
VNCSERVERS="1:root"
If I comment this out, there is no "FAILED" notice
starting vncserver at startup, but Xvnc doesn't
actually start.
In either case, once started up, and logged in as
root, I can run "vncserver" and starts a vnc session
for root, and I can remotely log in with an Xfce4
desktop.
So what is causing vncserver to think it is already
running as :1?
I'm sure I messed up a configuration file somewhere
along the line getting to this point. But I cannot
figure out which, or how to fix this problem.
TIA.

Confused about /media
by Paul Tomblin
I have an external USB drive with two partitions, one ext3 for backing
up my Linux box, and one FAT for when I want to move files between my
different computers. Formerly I had entries in /etc/fstab so that I
could mount them as needed, but now I find that when I boot they're
mounted in /media automagically. That's ok, I guess, but I have a
couple of questions about that.
1. The ext3 partition is /media/usbdrive, which is fine. The fat
partition, however, is /media/I__E_L_____ (it looks like that on a
text display, it looks worse on the console - all question marks and
those square blocks you get with unicode characters when the font
can't handle them). Is there a way to give that partition a more
meaningful name?
2. If I need to power down the drive or unplug it, do I need to
unmount it, or is whatever mounted it also responsible for
automatically unmounting it?

Yes, they have everything the equivalent from Sun have - for non-free stuff
like Java they just distribute the tools needed to create your own rpms. They
don't have J2EE 1.4 ready yet, but the SJSAS binary installer from Sun
installs fine over J2SE from jpackage.
You can also use yum or apt with them, so you can do things like:
# apt-get install jboss
Which is by far the easiest way to get new java software on your system.

SSH - cant connect
by xray
Hello,
on my FC3 laptop i have the problem that i cant connect via ssh. I tried
putty and cygwin ssh but both cant establish connection.
First thought, iptables are the reason. But after a 'service iptables
stop' the problem wasnt solved.
Any ideas ?
Bonus: I use cygwin and xwin -query <hostname> to connect to some
machines. What must i do to enable this on my laptop, too ?
Kind regards

kernel-smp-2.6.9-1.3_FC2.i686.rpm for FC2
by Alex F. Evonosky
FC2 --
New kernel was updated via up2date, and now it wiped out the older
kernel, and get the following error:
Preparing... ###########################################
[100%]
1:kernel-smp ###########################################
[100%]
No module megaraid found for kernel 2.6.9-1.3_FC2smp, aborting.
mkinitrd failed
Now, if this server was to reboot, there is no kernel for it to fall
back on since it was wiped out from up2date. What is a good way to fix
this?

Nautilus confused about mountable media
by Gérard Milmeister
I have the following scenario:
In fstab is an entry:
LABEL=Archive /mnt/Archive ext3 noauto,user,owner 0
2
In the Computer Nautilus window this appears as an unmounted harddisk icon
with the name "Archive".
When I click on the icon, the volume is mounted and a new Nautilus window
with
the contents of /mnt/Archive appears.
So far so good.
However:
1. The icon in the Nautilus window doesn't change to the mounted state. If
I close
the window and open it again, it then IS shown in the mounted state.
2. No Desktop icon appears. In GNOME 2.6 this would be the case, and it is
what I would expect. However sometimes (in another session), such an icon
DOES appear.
3. I have another entry:
LABEL=Store /mnt/Store ext3 noauto,user,owner,acl,user_xattr 0
2
The same applies here. However it sometimes happens that I cannot unmount
Store, a warning popping up, that the device is busy, but there are no processes
that use the device.
There is also a problem with the cdrom:
1. I put a CD-ROM in the drive and wait a little.
2. Then I click on the CD-ROM icon in the Nautilus Computer window.
3. A warning pops up, that says that the CD-ROM is already mounted
4. An icon is put on the Desktop ON TOP of an existing icon.
This is not fatal, but annoying to say the least.

Building a shared library on Fedora Core 2 ?
by shane crowe
Hi all,
I'm new here, so I hope this is a relevant post...
I have a command-line C program compiled under gcc on my 64 bit fedora core 2 box, all working very well.
Now I wish to package the C source into a shared object, to be called from another java program (java 1.5 for 64 bit linux)
I build my shared object as follows:
gcc -c -fPIC <c source files>
gcc -fPIC -shared <obj files> -o liblibrary.so
...which all works fine. I then put the .so into a place it can be found at runtime.
However, when I run the java project, it successfully kicks off the .so, but crashes in the middle of one of my C routines.
I have recompiled and run the same project on Windows using a DLL, with success. So my suspicions are that I have somehow incorrectly built my .so.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Shane

YUM configuration file
by Vincent Arnoux
Hi,
In spite of my searches on the web, I can only find "official" yum.conf
files for fedora core 2. As I am using fedora core 3, does a site like
easy-urpmi for Mandrake exists for fedora ?
Best regards,
Vincent Arnoux
