IP translation
by tony.chamberlain@lemko.com
I need a MAGIC BOX to do this
------ IP ADD 1, PORT 1 ----> MAGIC BOX -----> IP ADD 2, PORT 2
(eg convert something like 192.168.5.191/3660 to something like 192.168.5.100/222
but this is just an example).
Can anyone suggest anything? Preferably with a router (we have Linksys BEFSX41)
or with CentOS 4.5 (would have to be on the outgoing side).
What it actually will be used for is to run 100 or so instances of mysql on the same
machine but on different ports. Then each instance of mysql will have its onw logical
IP address.

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 destroyed after the most recent F8 updates
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
very weird:
after installing the most recent F8 updates, in a lot of my machines (not all!!) after reboot the
NIC information is destroyed, that is, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 has been
overwritten and altered to DHCP protocol.
It seems that kudzu-1.2.79.2-1 is the culprit.

[OT] Determining Video Formats
by Paul Lemmons
I am looking for a way to look at an AVI file and see how it was encoded
with enough detail that I could reproduce the process using transcode or
mencoder. I have a media server (D-Link DSM520) that plays most videos
absolutely perfectly. Some, though, it has trouble keeping audio sync. I
would like to compare the videos that work without issue to those that
have issues to see if I can identify what the differentiator might be. I
should then be able to identify those with problems and re-transcode
them to look like the files without the problem. That is the goal, anyway.
I suspect this is real easy but I am just not finding it and I am
completely Googled out. Any pointers in the right direction would be
much appreciated!

2.6.24.3 SMP kernel sees only one of my 2 cores..
by Gautam Thaker
I am running Fedora Core 8 w/ all the updates installed. The kernel
version is 2.6.24.3-34.fc8 SMP. I have been using the system happily
for about 2 months. I don't know just when, but in last week, the
kernel sees only 1 of my 2 cores. I know i have run quite some time
w/ 2 cores. I am not sure if this is related to some SW update or a
bios problem (i loaded "defaults" in bios) or can the CPU actually
break and be left w/ just 1 core? I do see a msg at start up, at very
start, that says:
i8042c: can not read CTR when initializing i8042.
Can this be related to my problem? Any hints welcome, I tried lots of
google search but did not find anything related.

[F8] procmailrc bug?
by Dan Thurman
I noticed that my mail stopped working, and checked out
the /var/log/maillog and it reported that procmail was unable
to write to the user's mail directory. The specific error was:
Error while writing to: "/$HOME/Mail/procmaillog"
I changed the procmailrc file so that the line:
MAILDIR=$HOME/Mail --> MAILDIR=$HOME/mail
LOGFILE=$HOME/Mail/procmaillog --> LOGFILE=$HOME/mail/procmail.log
Seems that instead of "Mail", it should be: "mail"
And everything started working again and no errors to the maillog file.
No virus found in this outgoing message.
Checked by AVG.

mmap cache can't open foo.php - Too many open files

Hi.
Using Apache version 2.2.3 on a VPS, my webpages are very slow and I
get this error messages on my 'error_log' file:
---------------------
[Wed Mar 26 13:05:39 2008] [warn-phpd] mmap cache can't open

Some data of my server:
---------------------
[]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached

Swap: 0 0 0
[]# ulimit -m

As you see, my Host provider gave me a VPS server with Swap=0.
I've got PHP 5.2.5 and APC (a Cache System) 3.0.17.
Any similar experience? Thank you very much.
