Yum problem -r
by Bob Goodwin
Suddenly a problem with yum and yumex.
It appears that when I invoke either I get an error message such as:
yum update yum
Loading "skip-broken" plugin
Loading "fastestmirror" plugin
Options Error: Error parsing '3\t#2008.03.26': invalid integer value
I tried rm rpm /var/lib/rpm__db* which helped in the past but to no
avail today.
Any suggestions welcome.

Cifs takes too long during authentication
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I use the following command to mount a remote MS Windows directory
(through a VPN connection):
mount -t cifs -o iocharset=iso8859-1,user="?????" //??????? /mnt/iso
It works fine but it takes more than 3 minutes to complete the
authentication process. Any ideas about how to speed up the
authentication process?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

"??" file in home dir.
by Richard Shaw
Anyone know what this is? I couldn't find any relevant pages in Google.
I have a file called "??" (no quotes) in the home directory of my
mythtv user. When I try to do anything to the file it acts like it's
not there. Is this something that fsck would fix? I don't know if it's
related but I noticed it after using "switchdesk" a few times to try
different desktop managers.
Relevant info:
F8 x86_64
Thanks,
Richard

yum freezes on an NFS mount
by Laurent Vaills
Hi.
On my Fedora box I have defined some NFS mount points like this in my
/etc/fstab :
<hostname>:/path/to/exported/dir /nfs/mount-point nfs user,hard,intr 0 0
But sometimes the machine <hostname> is not powered up.
When I run "yum -y upgrade" it freezes on "Running transaction test" .
So I decided to strace it and I saw it stops at stat64("/nfs/mount-point",
....
My first question is :
- Why yum/rpm has to go in that directory ?
- What are the correct options to put in the fstab in order not to have any
process frozen when they try access an NFS directory that does not respond ?

syncing Z22 with jpilot
by Howard Howell
HI, folks,
I have been trying everything I can find, but cannot successfully sync
my Z22, nor my wife's M500. I have read countless messages, edited the
USB rules, achieved getting the /dev/palm entry up, but still cannot
reliably sync these palm devices. Moreover, I have modified and
remodified things to the point that I no longer remember all the things
I have done, and my notes are scattered over several bits of paper, and
so forth. I kept thinking if I just do what this last person has said,
it will work, but NOOOO!!!!
OK, I'm an idiot or idjit or just dumb and dumber, but can someone
please tell me just what is causing the sequence below:
Sequence:
plugin Z22.
Press hotsync button (to get the pilot on line)
start jpilot
run hotsync

Is it possible to restart a USB device without unplugging it from the computer?
by Philip Brooks
Is there any way that you can restart a USB device using a shell command
without unplugging it from the computer?
The reason for this is that I have two Ueagle-atm modems setup and working
with Shorewall. I would like to be able to write a piece of script that
automatically restarts one of the modems if it crashes is this possible ?
I have looked for days on Google and other SE's to find a solution to this
problem but no cigar L
Many Thanks
Phil

PCMCIA wireless card that "works out of the box"?
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I have been struggling with a Linksys wpc54g card and I have pretty much
given up on it - I just want something that works reliably and "out of
the box" with native Linux (Fedora 8) support - instead of using
NDISwrapper etc. I am not trying to start a flame war, I just want
suggestions about well supported cards.
Thanks,
Phil.
