What linux lacks most - a decent remote fs
by Neal Becker
I used unix/linux for many years. In the past we've used nfs. But nfsv3
has no (useful) authentication. Anyone can setup a rogue machine and
pretend to be any uid/gid.
I understand that nfsv4 was supposed to fix that. Looking at the docs I
could find, it appears I'll never live long enough to understand how to set
that up, and I haven't yet found the idiot's guide to setting up nfsv4 with
authentication.
For now I'm using cifs. That's pretty sad.
I've glanced at afs, but there's no Fedora package.

Xine won't play DVD's after FC8 upgrade
by Jim Duda
I upgraded from fc7 to fc8 this week. After the upgrade, I can no
longer play DVDs using Xine. The program runs, but just stalls. This
worked fine in fc7. I can play the DVD's using mplayer and I can play
standard mpeg2 files using Xine, just having trouble with DVD play.
I believe I have everything installed.
It could be an issue with my Nvidia drivers, which I've installed myself
using the Nvidia installer.
I'm using xvmc.
Anyone have a similiar problem?

Two Internet connections...
by Frank Cox
I do some occasional tech work for a cable TV/Internet service provider. They
have now offered me free services, including cable Internet. I currently have a
DSL service through the telephone company and, for several reasons including the
fact that it is really unlimited service with no cap and it comes with newsgroup
access (neither of which the cable service has), I'm not really prepared to
give that up.
However, since I can get a free cable Internet service too I would like to be
able to put that to use.
Does anyone have any good ideas for what to do with an extra cable Internet
service? Is there, say, a way to somehow "shotgun" two Internet services like
you used to be able to do with dial-up modems to increase your transmission
speed?

fc8 runs too slow sometimes
by Paula J. Lindsay
Hi,
I am running a fc8 machine and things were going just fine until about a
week ago. Then, my machine started slowing down, almost to a crawl.
This is happening intermittently, but sometimes it lasts for 2 days.
This makes the scientists hindered and they are getting frustrated that I
can't figure it out. Here is a brief show of some of the processes.
Are these zombie processes?
vwong 31766 1 0 08:07 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/dbus-launch
--exit-with-session /usr/bin/startkde
vwong 31767 1 0 08:07 ? 00:00:00 /bin/dbus-daemon --fork
--print-pid 4 --print-address 6 --session
vwong 31788 1 0 08:07 ? 00:00:00
/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon
vwong 31791 1 0 08:07 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/gpg-agent -s
--daemon
vwong 31795 1 0 08:07 ? 00:00:12 /usr/bin/pulseaudio -D
The machine was just rebooted two days ago. If these are zombie
processes, I can reboot again, but does this mean I have to
reboot every two days? Is there a program that sucks up the cpu time?
Sendmail is running on this machine when it doesn't
need to and he is using kde. Please, can anyone out there help?
Many thanks in advance,
Paula

Installed where / how?
Perhaps you mean System -> Prefs -> Look and Feel -> Font? There's only
1 bold there - the window title. The Document font is Sans - regular - 10.

I looked thru the man pages for lp and lpoptions - nothing to set the
font. Nothing in Admin -> Printer either.

I'm comparing it to gedit's printouts.

Problem with scanner and websites
by Nilesh Govindrajan
I am having two problems with my system -
1. I can't open some sites like drupal.org ; etc.
I am using OpenDNS. Opening the site through a proxy works. But on my
system, even lynx doesn't open it. Just keeps loading......loading.....
How to solve this ?
2. My scanner is available to root only
I have a USB printer cum scanner.
I can print with my user account but only root account is able to scan.
Even when I run the sane-find-scanner with my user account, it doesn't
detect my scanner ; but it works with root account.
I have attached two files which have the output of the commands with
each of the accounts. Please go through it and help me.
# sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the

which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

yum stuck on update
by Dave Burns
I tried to do a yum update. It turns out someone had turned on
yum-updatesd on that machine. My update proceeded until the
transaction test and hung:
[snip]
Downloading Packages:
{snip]
(8/8): devhelp-0.13-13.fc 100% |=========================| 183 kB 00:03
Running rpm_check_debug
Running Transaction Test
Before, when I stupidly tried to do a yum update with yum-updatesd
running, it has given me an error message about a locked resource or
something. Not this time.
I stopped yum-updatesd, no help there.
How can I get it unstuck?
TIA,
Dave
